About to upgrade my 600D for a 70D for an African Safari in August.
Looking at getting the Canon 100 to 400mm L lens, is the Canon lens the best way to go
or should I be looking at Sigma or Tamron?
Any advice appreciated! Thanks.

The Sigma 150-500 or the IS version of the Sigma 50-500 would be suitable alternatives. The Canon though is a bit lighter and that may be a consideration for a safari.

I have the 100-400 and 400 5.6 prime.

I also had the sigma 150-500.

I would say if you need a zoom go with the 100-400. I never had very much luck with the 150-500. it was "ok" and the 500 was nice. but the 100-400 is much sharper and faster.

if you will be working at 400 almost exclusively go with the prime. It is MUCH sharper than the 150-500 and the AF is to die for.

the new tamron 150-600 is coming out and might be a very good option to look at also

I've seen a few guys that have done the safari thing, and they usually say to get a zoom as you cannot always predict how close an opportunity will be. And the 100-400L is one of the most recommended for this.

Always found this review interesting from a reviewer on an African Safari:

The #1 choice for image quality, price, and flexibility is the 100-400 for sure. I owned a 400/5.6, and have tested various other lenses and the 100-400 is still the lens I prefer when I shoot wildlife.

If you're talking about a long zoom then with the classic options (Sigma 150-500, Sigma 50-500, Canon 100-400) it's very simply: You start off with an excellent lens (150-500) and if you pay more, you get an even better one.

If you can afford it take a look at the Sigma 120-300 F/2.8 EX DG OS(Sport) and a set of
Sigma 1.4X and 2X transverses. It's a great lens, if you take the time to master it.
