I am trying to order a great shot I took of my kids in a leaf pile on a 20x30 Standout from WHCC. I shot it with my 5DM2 using my 70-200 f2.8L while laying on my stomach.

I did not crop the image at all so what I have is technically a 187 dpi image for a 20x30 print. When I submitted the order to WHCC I requested that someone please advise me if the resolution would not be sufficient (resulting in a waste of $90 for a product that would not please me).

I got a response today from WHCC suggesting I re-size (I assumed they meant re-sample) in Photoshop to 300 dpi for a 20x30 print. I know how to do this (I have CS2) but just wanted to make sure if there something special I have to do other than a bicubic resampling. I've never had anything printed larger than 11x14 so this is why I'm asking here.

What about other WHCC products that may not require the optimal 300 dpi? Are there any? Perhaps a canvas print? What should I expect with 187 dpi for such product(s)?

Opinion: It'll look fine as a print or on canvas. Remember that once it's 20x30 and hanging on the wall, you're unlikely to go inspect it at nose-length.

Suggestion: Do a 100% crop at 4"x6" at 187ppi - so that'll be 748x1122 of your original pixels (not resampled or resized, just crop a small chunk of the original image) - have that printed on a 4x6 paper and see if it's up to your standards. I have a hunch it'll be fine.

Alternate suggestion: Undo any final output sharpening steps you've done in Photoshop, scale it up to 10% larger than you need at 300ppi (6600x9900), scale it back down to the final dimension you need at 300ppi (6000x9000), then apply your final output sharpening.

Canvas is very forgiving since there's texture and a little bleed. It should look great at 187ppi on canvas, especially if the content fits well with that medium (kids in a leaf pile should be fantastic on canvas). Most print services require 150ppi for canvas prints, some only even require 100ppi. Don't forget that you may need to add some pixels for the wrap around the canvas frame, especially if the kids are very close to the edges of the image.

If going w/ Canvas, also check out CGProPrints...their canvas is very well done and their prices are outstanding.

They only request 150dpi since you loose some resolution on canvas anyway.

If you need help resizing I can lend a hand and add the wrap section as well...OnOne software does this very well.
