I did the opposite. I'm not going back to that sensor....

Very happy with D5100.

Thanks,

I suppose the easiest way would be to list pro's and con's between the two.

D5100:

Pro's - Dynamic range, Noise control above ISO800, grain at high ISO is smoother, focusing in live view, can set minimum shutter speed when using Auto-ISO.

Con's - A little small (I like big cameras), viewfinder is a bit small, has a tendency to over-expose (maybe subjective, but I tend to use -0.7 EV all the time)

600D:

Pro's - feels slightly more high-end than D5100 but no better built, bigger (see above..), LCD screen looks great.

Con's - Low ISO IQ not as good, high ISO IQ not as good, images often look "flat" comparitavely, ugly grain, chroma-noise, Auto-ISO not as advanced.

Hope this helps.

Yes, that's helped a lot - thanks very much. I used to own a D5100 and was sorry I sold it, so I'm toying with buying another DSLR. It's cheaper looking than buying ;)

Thanks again,
AL

There's one caveat. I'm only using Nikon until Canon catches up with sensor tech at which point I'll be coming back to Canon. Their lens selection is better on the whole and they have the 135L which Nikon have nothing to compare.

So, if you're looking to get back into DSLR photography and want to pick an eco-system and stick with it, I'd be tempted to go with Canon. I don't mind switching between them, that's all. I'll be back with an EOS at some point (I hope...)

Gary.

here's a cheaper tip: join a local camera club (even if you don't own a camera) look on media websites (TV/ newspaper) or on http://www.meetup.com (external link) for information on local photography groups.
On local photowalks you will meet other friendly photogs and they will lend you a variety of cameras and lens -- Canon, Nikon and maybe other brands to shoot for the day. Be sure to bring a couple of memory cards and shoot in RAW and JPG with different camera setups on the same subject.
Use a free RAW converter like http://toolson.net/RawConverter (external link) which can be used on any model.

You may be surprised on which system has the best images!!
(of course for wildlife and bird shots the lens is most important)

My brother in law belongs to a few clubs and having listened to his experiences I'm sure it's not for me :)

I tried that once. Thought I'd walked onto the set of a Little Britain episode...

* shudders....

I used to have one, no complains. Clean pics @ high ISO, I had it paired with the 50mm 1.8G.

Some pics:
