What do Canon lens repairs cost?

Just a ballpark guestimate.

I realize different lenses and different problems vary widely. However, my particular problem is widely-known and a simple repair. I am just trying to get a rough idea whether or not it is worth the $15 to ship it to Canon for the estimate. Do simple repairs run in the ballpark of $100 or $300?

It's a 50MM f1.4 that won't AF or MF. Because it won't MF, the motor is probably not the problem. Not to mention it probably has no more that 20 hours total usage before failure. The focus ring just spins - probably that well-documented helical focus problem.

A local LCS will repair in house for $125-$150, but I would rather have Canon do it if in the same price range. But paying canon $250 to repair a $299 lens don't make sense. Any help appreciated.

(I already have the videos and tutorials on this problem, but have decided I don't want to tackle the job myself. Thanks.)

Here in the UK we don't need to send anything to Canon, we simply drop it off at a local photo shop and they deal with it. I'm always surprised to hear that in the US it seems you don't have that option?

oh wow...i feel like that's new, i don't remember them offering an estimate on repairs before

they typically have repair minimums for each lens, and it seems like most repairs fall into that price...so i'd expect it to be the 119 quoted by john above plus shipping and tax you're probably looking at like $135 or so

Dropped a 70-300 IS USM lens. It messed up the zoom and caused some of the circuitry to pop our of place and into the barrel. Canon quoted me $490.

I contacted a company called C.R.I.S. in Arizona at the recommendation of another member here. They did the job for $180.

I dropped my 16-35 down a waterfall. It hit a rock on the filter threads and came to rest in a pool of water. Still attached to my 5D3, mind you. Canon charged me $500 to replace the threads, clean it out, and replace the broken focusing mechanism. They wouldn't start work until they got my CC number

Not sure why you are even posting this.... how should any of us know what it costs to fix your busted lens? Like someone said above, ask Canon for an estimate.

considering this is a lens that has a history of AF repair, i'd venture to guess that quite a few members here have had their lens fixed by canon...so they would know how much...

Not even worth answering. It is apparent you did not read the OP at all. Take a precious moment out of your life and do that now, and perhaps learn a lesson for the future that will be helpful to you: when answering questions, read the question first.

Thank you so much for your post. I did not know this new estimate thingie existed either.

Thanks to all. Very helpful answers. Yes, like I said in the OP, the problem on this lens is quite common and I just wanted to get a general idea. $119 ain't bad at all. Very fair.

And yes, I'll try to remember to post back here how the repairs and length of time it took went. Thanks again.
