The following link leads to a report posted on the Rob Galbreith Forum of an apparent bug in DPP which produces a supposedly 16 bit tif which is really 8 bit data encapsulated in 16 bit. I have duplicated the test the poster did and his conclusion seems justified. Since 16 bit is, IMO, one of the main reasons for shooting RAW, I won't be using DPP until Canon addresses this problem. A shame, since I actually quite like DPP.

From one test someone did it appears to be camera versus picture style specific, so if you like the picture style that works with your camera it seems to work fine. This may help explain why I hate results from portrait picture style, but love results from nuetral and sometimes faithful picture styles.

Anyway if it is a problem it needs to be fixed. I just wish they would fix the bug that does not allow transfer of images to CS2 version of PS.

I may do my own test later today just to see for myself.

With 350/XT files "Standard" seems to be ok, all the others not. Unfortunately, I also prefer "Faithful". "Standard" can be somewhat over the top sometimes (it seems to be Canon's attempt to provide P&S performance for DSLRs) and it has a tendency to clip at the high end. OTOH, with saturation and contrast put down to minimum values and exposure dropped by 1/3 of a stop, I still like it better than RSE.
