Sony a7r single exposure

After reading the ML dual iso topic, I thought I'd post a comparison from a single exposure shot using my new Sony a7r. All processing, including noise reduction was handled in Photoshop CC's camera raw editor. For me, I believe the sensor in this camera will severly reduce the need to shoot sets of multiple exposure bracketed images in the future.

This image was shot using my Sigma 35 f1.4 lens at these settings: f2.2, 1/4000th @ iso 100.

Thanks. So far, I'm very impressed with this camera. Here's one more shot from this morning at the local cafe. This is a single image I processed like the image above. I did add the border on the after image in photoshop.

Well dual ISO is meant to macth the Sony 14EV not surpass it, after using my cousin's NEX I wanted to rip the sensor off my Canon for one of theirs.

I agree. Since going to the D800 I need to bracket far less often and also the Lee ND Grad filters just don't get much use. The other benefit of the Sony sensor is the lack of banding in the shadows.

Assume shooting at ISO 200, how clean are the files when pushed to the edge? I find my self in many times maxing out highlights and shadows, ie bringing back highlights and brining up shadows. I would be very interested to look at the A7R just for the sensor which is about $1,000 cheaper than getting the D800E. Love the examples above and very confidence inspiring. Thoughts?

Sorry it took so long to reply. I'm not sure what the best way is to answer your question short of you viewing an image at 100%. Here are the adjustments I made to a shot of a DC-3 in Photoshops camera raw editor only. You can see that the iso is 100 and that both the highlights and shadows adjustments are maxed. No noise reduction was applied. To view the image at 100%, click on the link for the jpg (the image has been cropped). The file size is 3.8mb.

Thank you for the response! Certainly looks incredible and would never have even guessed that the shadows were even pushed. 0 noise in the shows. Could you post 100% crops from your first 2 images, from the shadow area? Thanks!

George, I hope you have a fast enough internet connection to open these files at full size. If not, I will do a crop but to be honest, the before is so dark, I'm not sure where would be best to take a 100% crop from. Here are the settings I used in ACR just now since I had to reset the raw adjustments and are the only adjustments made. No noise removal and no sharpening either. I would normally do additional tweaking once opened in Photoshop.

Note too that the iso is 100 rather than some high iso number.

I should add that I would be willing to make the raw file available too if you'd like to play with it. You need the newest version of Photoshop's raw editor 8.3 or LR 5.3 to edit the Sony raw files. The lens used is the new Sigma 35 f1.4 and lens correction works in the editor. You will need to remove CA in the raw editor. The raw file is 35.16mb.

That's pretty impressive...

Kirk, no I haven't experienced a problem with blurring caused by shutter vibration nor have I tested for it. I typically don't shoot at long focal lengths with that slow a shutter speed or at least I haven't with this camera yet. From what I gather, this phenomenon seems to be caused by a pretty narrow combination of circumstances.

Here is the closest image I've taken so far with the a7r to those circumstances. This was shot using my Canon 85 f1.8 at f2 and 1/80th. The iso was 6400. I used no noise reduction and did no sharpening...not even in acr. If you'd like to see the full sized jpg, let me know and I'll post a link.

The shot was also hand held and manual focused...and it looks like I need to do some restocking to my bar.
