I have a Canon 5D Mark III I am planning to use on a tripod and want to capture a classroom instructor with clean audio. I think the built in microphone will capture lots of background noise from the class.

Based on your experience what solution would you use to get the job done with clean audio?

I can get a preowned Sennheiser Evolution G2 100 Series - UHF Lavalier System for $350. Is that a good deal? Would that do the job well?

If you're on a budget, buy a zoom h1 and a lavalier. Test your levels before putting it on the instructor. Begin recording and you can clap if you need to in order to sync audio or use plural eyes in post. You can also use the system you are proposing. You can also look at investing in a good shotgun mic.

Would the Sennheiser Shotgun mic be clean audio or would it pick up background noise?

Any mic in most situations is only as good as how close you can get it. A shotgun is nothing like a zoom lens, especially for interiors. A camera-mounted shotgun at the back of the class will be getting lots of indirect sound, that is, the reverberation in the room, not to mention the noises students make. This means echo and reverb, sometimes difficult to hear the speaker, not clean sound at all.

A wireless lav like a Sennheiser EW100G2 is a reasonable choice, and $350 is a reasonable price, if the system is one that uses legal frequencies. A few years ago the FCC in their wisdom reallocated a lot of the frequencies that were popular for wireless, so you don't want to buy a unit on the "old" freqs.

Info here:

You don't want anything between 698 and 806MHz, it's illegal to use in the US. Still legal in Canada, I think? The Sennheisers have the freq range printed on the back - very small print.

There are a few potential points of failure with wireless - make sure you have it working at home before going out on a job, monitor with headphones if possible, and listen to some playback. There are some setup guides on youtube...

Yes, the Sennheiser is a good match for the Canon.

Do keep in mind though sometime in 2014 the FCC is planning on auctioning off the band (frequencies) that the majority of wireless systems in the U.S. utilize and has yet to put in place a system where the winning bidder will be required to compensate existing wireless users for their loss of investment in equipment, once they have to vacate the frequencies they are currently operating on.

Wow! Never knew there were illegal frequencies!

Also, it sounds like ALL wireless could become obsolete in 2014, did I read that correctly?

It will not become obsolete, but it may go through some changes, so if you do buy a wireless system get some kind of proof of purchase you may be in for a reimbursement.

And I would encourage anyone who has an investment in wireless to write the FCC demanding they put into regulation whoever gets the spectrum is required to buy out those investments before they are allowed to build their system.
