What did I do? 60D dead – HELP!

I accidently grabbed my 60D without a card in it and started to take photos. It took a few then froze up. I then realized that it didn’t have a memory card in it. Now the camera will not work. When turning on the red light blinks twice then nothing.

Any clues on how to get the camera working again????

I have tried removing and replacing battery. No luck...

Try a hard reboot. I think the process is to remove the battery, turn it on even without the battery, then hold the shutter button for 60 seconds, then turn the switch to off then reinsert the battery and try it. That may not be the exact process but you can search it. I don't think it is toast, you will get it back.

I don't have a 60D so TTuna may be correct for this model but I thought a hard boot required removal of the main battery AND the small battery that runs the clock/date data. Leave both out for about 30 minutes and reinsert.

Don't look for a backup battery because there isn't any in the 60D. Remove main battery, turn on, hold shutter button down, turn off, reinsert battery. Make sure memory card is installed, then power up.

im curious why it would need a memory card, and why shooting with out a memory card would cause this, i can not imagine that the camera is that sensitive that it would "break" with out a memory card while shooting

im just asking because i dont think shooting with out a memory card is the issue.

I agree with what's stated in the linked thread. The 60D shoots without a card by default, likely for demo purposes. It's highly unlikely that lack of memory card is the reason your camera malfunctioned.

First of all I want to thank you all for responding.

Before I was going to dive into the suggestions above I wanted to make sure the battery had a full charge. It was low but I didn’t think it was low enough to cause the camera to just shut down.

After reading comments by “webejamn and Rashkh” I decided to put the partially charged battery back in the camera to see what would happen.

This is the EMBARRASSING part...... The camera fired right back up. It was a low battery……It was just a coincidence that it died when there was no memory card. I just assumed that was the reason that it froze.

There is a backup battery in the 60D, but.... it is mounted internally on the circuit board. You would have to dismantle the camera to get at it.. yuck!

Dan, that is for sure the most common human fallacy. In fact, there is a brand of beer that has a whole series of commercials based on it.

Thats great news, glad to hear it wasnt anything major. i usually start with human error as when beginning my troubleshooting, and it is usually the case.
