Hi folks. Advanced amateur with stills, but last time I shot anything video was Hi8! But just bought a 5D III and it looks so interesting, i have to learn more and play around. So, questions of course :)

1. I know picture style does not affect RAW, but does affect jpg. Does it also affect video files?

2. What do you use for editing? I bought (and instantly returned) Adobe Premiere Elements. Hated it for a number of reasons. Is Sony Studio HD my best choice on something reasonably priced?

3. How do you sharpen video? These programs do not seem to have sharpening.

4. What about "grading"? Is that something just for pros or do you do this somehow post shooting with DSLR video?

5. And last, how do you choose lenses? Same as for still? If so, I have a lot of choices.

Thanks. I'll do a little searching here as well to see what previous conversations have value for me.

Yes Picture Style does affect video, there are a number that you can download from places. I set one up on my 7D, reduced the contrast and saturation levels. I use Serif MoviePlus X6 previously used X5, you can get a freeby version if you want to try it. I find it OK for me. http://www.serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ (external link)
this program has sharpening though I haven't used it. Choice of lens is what gives DSLR's the advantage.

1. Picture style does effect video. It is usually best to turn saturation, contrast, etc. all the way down. It can always be added in during post.

2. I use Sony Vegas Pro 10

3. In Sony Vegas there are options for video sharpening.

4. I just edit the colors to what I feel looks best.

5. The Canon 24-105 is great for video. It is best to use a lens that has IS and has a smooth focus ring.

Thanks for the tips.

Funny that I do not find "sharpening" listed as a feature of most programs and yet the video picture styles turn sharpening way down. Not a good idea to sharpen in camera at all?

Good point on IS. I will stick with my three lenses with IS. Did not think of that.

Off to go look at Serif Movie.

For the most part Sharpening adds noise so bad that is not acceptable. (IMHO), Grading can be done by anyone, It can also be focused on as an entire career, but you have to be damn good and consistantly good. Everything else is pretty much to taste. and You get what you pay for.... Everywhere.

First step........ Take the lens cap off.
