Not true.
Check out the EF 40mm STM "pancake" lens.
It is actually noisy.

There are plenty of You Tube videos showing this.

Really? I found mine to be extremely quiet... maybe cause it was new? I don't know... I didn't keep mine since it was too similar to my 35mm but a stop slower, heck of a nice lens though. If it had been out before I bought my 35mm, I'd still own it.

Yes, the 40mm STM is slightly noisy because it uses Gear-Type STM. It is quieter than Micro Motor AF but slightly noisier than Ring Type USM. All the other EF-S STM lenses use Lead-Screw Type STM which is virtually silent.

Here are two quick videos I just made using my SL1 to show how the focus noise compares:

The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM utilizes a gear-type that allows the lens to achieve an ultra-compact and lightweight design; whereas the EF-S 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM uses a lead-screw type, which prioritizes AF performance, offering the smoothest and quietest operation.

The 18-135mm STM is both fabulous for stills and video. On both my 700D and EOS M it is totally silent. Focuses quickly too.

For a kit lens, very very sharp with fabulous image quality. This is coming from a guy who loves fast primes.

A few months ago, I shot a promotional video for AusAid using only my EOS M and 18-135mm STM. Got some great footage, even in low light.

True,, but not too bad unless the surroundings are totally silent.
