I'm looking at the G series cameras for a project I'm working on.

The need is to have a camera with either wired or wireless take an image and instantly send that image to a computer.

Right now I'm doing that with a dslr and a camranger. That works but we have to go through a bunch of hoops for each setup. Hardware is not consistent between shoots because each shooter provides their own camera. We want to change that by providing our own.

I own a G10 and it works great, but from what I read it is the last G series that supports tethering. While tethering is not exactly what I need I do need to shoot and have the image instantly available on a computer.

The G1X looks to have the best image quality but the G16 has wifi built in. According to the Eye-fi site there is a bug with the G1x and Eye-fi cards that makes it shut off and restart with each shot. That could be an issue for us. What I don't know about the G16 is if it will transfer a shot as it is taken to a pc or if it only does the transfer via canons gateway.

For me wifi is not a non-starter. I don't have any problem with shooting tethered but I need the instant transfer of images.

Can anyone here clue me in on if either of these cameras will do what I need?

Yes, the G10 was the last PowerShot camera to be able to tether to your computer. I don't have the G16, but info on Canon's website shows the Canon Image Gateway (Cloud-based) is the connection between your camera and PC, etc.

Check the WiFi feature, and the two videos (animated graphics) at the bottom of the page.

EDIT: You might want to ask your question again in this thread, since there is someone at least who seems to be having some success with posting directly to Facebook.

Ok.... tested out my G16 with my iMac...

Setup:

I already had my G16 setup to connect to my home wifi network. In playback mode, i hit the wifi button on the G16. Then I selected the computer icon. It popped up my iMac and selected that. I now have an icon for my iMac when i go back into the wifi section.

To use:

On G16
1) take picture(s)
2) hit playback button
3) hit wifi button
4) select my iMac icon

now go to iMac
5) on imac go to "image capture" app.
6) Highlight G16
7) select images and import or simply import all

There does not appear to be a way for pictures to automatically transfer after they are taken.

Bummer.

I was really hoping one of these would work.

Workflow right now is one person shoots (greenscreen), image transfers immediately using a camranger and another person adds the background and prints.

You would think something so simple would be easier to do.

What about picking up a G15 and using the Eye-Fi?
