I know, there are dozens of posts that talk about a bag to travel with a camera, hike with a camera and so forth. My dilemma is that I travel a lot, and I'd like to carry my 6D or 7D with a 24-105 and maybe a wide angle lens. Ok, there are lots of bags for that I get it. I also need to carry my laptop/ MS Surface Pro, zippered pouch with VGA, Power, HDMI cables and a mouse (pc type hopefully). Then there is the zippered pouch with my hope to get home, or where ever kit if I'm on the road when the next terrorist event occurs.

So I guess I need a brief case, backpack or sling style, with a camera area that will fit in the overhead bin, even on CRJs.

I've got a Mountain Smith Borealis that I use on oversees trips that works fine on long trips on large aircraft. However, it is too big and bulky for CONUS travel. I recently acquired a Kata 3n1 30 that I will travel with this week for the first time, but it seems just a bit large but doable.

Has anyone figured out the the "right" bag for this type of travel. It seems all bags are either utility/admin or camera, not a blend of both.

Thanks
Sorry for the long explanation.

Take a look at the Domke F-804 Super Satchel (external link) with a Domke 720-230 insert. You can add the F-901 or F-902 pouches on the ends for more storage.

Will all of those things you listed fit in a CRJ even WITHOUT a bag?!? That is a lot of stuff regardless of what the bag looks like. I would try and stack all of those items on top of each other on your dinning room table and take a measurement of the area it consumes and then go from there...

You say you use the Mountain Smith Borealis with all of the stuff, is there any room left over? If not, unless you buy Marry Poppins' bag, nothing will help consume less space.

Very insightful. Thank you

Looked at the Think Tank Airport Accelerator? Carry on compliant, and it takes a lot of gear.

Way to big of a bag for his needs and won't fit into a crj.

My rolling Think Tank Airport International hasn't met a CRJ yet that it won't fit into the overhead compartment with. It's amazing, getting it past the gate checkers is another issue though, they see the wheels and automatically hand you a gate check tag.

We'll, I fly about 50 flights a year (about 10 on crjs) and the only way to fit a accelerator/interntional on deltas smallest planes is under the seat. When you do that the bag will go half way into the other seats leg room. Delta has some bigger sized crjs that could fit it in the overhead but if you fly on a smaller one you are out of luck.

Think Tank Urban Disguise 35 V2. It will carry a body with lens attached, plus a couple of more lenses and flash, etc. and it also has a zippered pouch for a small laptop. I use it when I am travelling all the time - advantage is that it looks very professional and I would have no problems carrying it to my work related meetings, etc. as opposed to a backpack. Look into it.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I've flown on quite a few CRJ's and the last one I flew was this one.

http://www.seatguru.com …Airlines_Canadair_CRJ.php (external link)

Quoted from this webpage:

"The tray tables are too small to easily use a laptop and overhead bin space is limited and can hold only a 18in x 14in x 7in rollaboard suitcase. The windows are set low, making it difficult for tall passengers to see out. The ceiling is also low, including in the toilet. Engine noise is loudest at the back of the cabin."

If the overhead was 7" on that flight I'd be amazed, very small overheads. When I slid the Airport International into the bin the wheel hung over the edge and I thought I was screwed, but the door shut over it, thankfully.

Thanks Guys, Lots of good stuff. I flew a CRJ200 today and the Kata 3n1-35 fit in the overhead with some extra convincing. The bag doesn't wear all that well for what I "want", but it did carry everything. Jon's suggestion for the DOMKE got me looking and I saw the removable camera inserts. I'll be at a trade show next week and plan to look at the Maxpedition bags that I might be able to fit the camera insert in and my normal gear. Just an idea. I enjoy projects...

You would think in this time of can't live without electronics this bridge would have been crossed. Guess my requirements exceed the camera and laptop/iPad. No one else carries a charger, cables and meeting notebook (analog)?

thanks for looking. Don't give up.
