Ok, well I'm coming up on a chance to buy a Canon 28-70mm 2.8L, but I already have a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. Now I know the Canon is an L but it's an old lens so I'm wondering if it's worth it, even though I already have the Tammy 28-75mm. I currently shoot with a 50D but I've got a 5DII on the back of a UPS truck (should be here by Thursday).

What are you thoughts?

I like mine a lot.
Keep in mind that parts are scarce and Canon does not service them anymore.

How much?

^^ That's my concern. The guy who's selling it if asking $650, or best offer.

Good price.
Make sure to check the elements as there has been delamination on some. Also check for fungus etc.
If you search the lens here you will find a few of the comments concerning these known issues.

Offer him $600.
I think you might be able to recoup that much just parting it out on eBay.

I'd keep the Tamron. I haven't shot on the 28-70L, but I did shoot a bit with the 24-70L mk1 and I wasn't super impressed. From what I've seen the Tamron is 90% as good as the 24-70L mk1 if not higher, which from what I understand is a better lens than the 28-70L... so I'd stick with the Tamron. Do you find your Tamron lacking? Or or are you chasing better IQ based on what you've read?

I love my 28-70L. Its supposed to be sharper than even the 24-70. It works fantastic as an all purpose lens on a full frame body, but it is a beast in size.

My Tamron's not lacking. I've been more than satisfied with it on my 50D and I'm hoping to be equally satisfied (if not more) with it on my 5DII when it shows up. I just want to start getting a couple L lenses (for the L quality) and this is one that just came up. I have shot with the 24-70 mk1 as well and wasn't blown away either which is another reason why I'm asking for opinions on the 28-70L.

Don't buy into the "L = Better" mentality. The L logo is mostly just marketing. There are plenty of non-L Canon lenses that are built just as well and often perform just as well or better than other L lenses (their newest IS primes are a perfect example of this). If you're happy with your Tamron, keep it, I've seen plenty of pros using that lens with great results.

Stick with the Tamron if you like it. It's smaller, lighter, costs less, and still offers great image quality. I've been using it several years on both crop and full-frame, and I don't see myself replacing it.

Stick with the Tamron, you'll actually enjoy the lens better to be honest with your new 5D, while the L lens is nice i really think the differences would be very small to be honest

Heya,

Save your money for something that you don't already have.

You're not upgrading from that Tamron to an older `L version. Canon's newer stuff is pretty much on par, and better than in many cases, some of Canon's previous `L stuff.

Very best,

stick with the tamron. On a crop, the differences are negligible. I had the canon 24-70, and even then, the differences were really small. Mostly corner sharpness and vignetting. You wont experience those problems on crop.

The tamron is fairly lightweight comparatively, where the 28-70 will be very large and bulky with no optical edge (might even be softer than the tamron in the center).
