Music on your homepage?

I hope I don't open up a can of worms with this question but what's you opinion on having background music on your homepage? I don't have music on mine right now, and I'm wondering if it may seem more inviting to a potential client if there were. Thoughts?

No, no, just don't do it. You have no way of knowing what kind of music the person visiting your website likes or if they are listening to some music on their computer already. Maybe they are somewhere quiet or browsing at work?

If you do wish to use music, don't make it autostart - give the visitor an option to start the music themselves. That way they can listen if they want to. Best of both worlds.

Just say no. Music is probably the biggest reason people bailout early when a site pops up. It presumes that you know their viewing environment and that your choice of music is complementary. If the viewer already has an audio source active or finds your music undesirable they simply close the window ands move on.

But I'm a big NO person right here. (Unless it's done in a way that it's not an auto-load, but the browser can press Play).

If I load a page, and it has music - I close the page before I've even worried about seeing or reading anything.

Same here, annoys the heck out of me. Even worse when you are on someone's website and they have different music on every page. I move on and don't go back.

No. How to instantly lose a portion of your visitors before they've even bothered looking at the content. It is a no-brainer. Don't do it it unless you're prepared to miss out of several viewers just because you though music was a good idea.

I agree with the others NO! It annoys the crap out of me and always makes the site run slower (which are usually slow as it loads all the pics).

Nope- your home page has music, I'm closing the page and looking somewhere else.

No, I hear music, I leave, i see music as a possibility of starting , I leave. Any site, any subject matter.

We had music on our site for awhile, then we took it down. Here is something to think about... most people are surfing the web during work hours and would prefer to quietly visit NON-work sites. If they come across your site and the music kicks in, they are more likely to quickly close out. Another issue with music (as someone else stated) is that you don't know if it would attract the client or discourage them from viewing the site. I would have to agree with the majority and say; not a good idea.

All them good solid negatives and we haven't even touched on the rights of the artist and writer of the piece. Unless you are going to use a piece that you wrote and performed yourself it could be a real minefield.

Seriously, the only site I would want background music on would be a musician's - and even then, auto-start is a no-no. Plus, don't get started on "accidental" rights infringement...
