What to expect from the 6D arriving this week!

I just sold my 5DII cause the low light situation, I was sometimes having problems, so after getting the money I ordered from B&H the super Deal:

Canon 6D and the gifts that came with it (monopod-memory card-battery-Canon bag)
for a real cheap price

I once was in a camera store and hold it in my hands and noticed it was smaller and the back wheel was not as quality as the 5DII

Yesterday I was with my Fuji XE2 on a ice rink with poor light situation, believe me I wished I had the big camera, but again, I knew what to expect, and I like to travel lite.

But what should I expect from the 6D coming from the 5DmkII ?
Any nice surprise?

You should expect to be able to throw it's ISO to 1600~6400 and not even notice noise. Which means you can roll low light with a fast lens, and keep a shutter speed that lets you still freeze time. Such as in an ice rink. This also helps with autofocus (having high ISO and wide aperture).

Just take care (like with all DSLRs) to not underexpose and try to pull the shadows in post. That's where you will see noise early.

Proper exposure is key.

I upgraded my FF from a 5Dc to the 6D. If low-light was your motivation, prepare to be surprised. This shot was taken taken with a 6D/Tamron 28-75 at 75mm. ISO 102,400 - 1/20, f/5.6. Lighting is a 60W incandescent spot bounced of the ceiling at camera left, and a 40W fluorescent fish-tank lamp directly camera right. It isn't art, but it is useable.
This is not SOOC. I had to play with it more than I care to in LR. There was lots of yellow noise so I had to de-saturate yellow by 25.

I think 102,400 is a bit much, as in emergency only. ISO 25,600 jpgs are fine right out of the camera. I am experimenting with auto-ISO with 25,600 as my upper limit. Noise is just not much of a problem for this camera. I can compare it to my 60D as follows. Since I shoot raw, I do run through the DETAILS panel in LR for NR/Sharpness. I find the 6D files at 25,600 require about the same level of attention as my 60D does at 3200-6400 depending on exposure and subject matter. An easy two stops of low-light improvement.

I don't shoot anything that requires 25,600. My new 35 f/2 IS and the 6D at 1600-3200 is all I need. I puts the 5Dc to shame at those levels. And more is available if I need it. Enjoy your new camera.

Yes I noticed it is one to two stops cleaner, which would be great for indoors shooting
as I do, Dancers and Performing arts.thx

Sure, I know that when I pull the shadows into brighter level, its not the best way to get a clean pic.
Even in RAW???

If I can shoot concerts at F4-5 12000, i'll be happy .I don't make prints yet, basically for websites with great IQ!

An EF 70-200 F4L with or without IS with the 6D set at 12,800 ISO would eat up your task. 8x10 Print level easily.

Last time i've shot a concert, I was really there as a fan, but I did took along my Camera and my 24-105 lens.
I had to shoot at 1\30 to 1\60 of a sec, but managed to pull some nice photos, but nothing pro!
I was really far, and this was cropped a lot, and PP in photoshop!

Take that shutter speed, and speed it up by 2 stops. That's your new advantage with the ISO performance of the 6D. And if you want better autofocus, simply use a really wide aperture lens (regardless of actually shooting with it wide open), it affects autofocus performance big time. 2 stops doesn't seem like much, but it's a big deal when you go from 1/30s to something faster that reduces blur and captures the same moment frozen in time. And doing it far away, with 200mm, where shake comes in a lot faster as length increases. So if you have faster shutter, IS, etc, all of this helps secure a better more focused/sharp image, and having a high ISO helps do that when flash is not available or allowed, and having high ISO handling without tons of noise is a big deal there.

The 6D is on my current wish list. Even though it's a dated camera in some regards, it's still better at noise handling than even the mighty 5Diii. And I'm all about the noise handling as my primary shooting is done at night and in low light.

ISO 3200-100K, and center point AF are noticeably better. Noise profile seams easier to clean as well, since color channels are probably hammered equally. AutoISO implementation also a lot better (but still incomplete). If you use outer points, the joypad is really clunky compared to the joystick. You will learn to love silent shutter.

1/4000 max shutter is a nuisance.

Maybe I don't know but where do 2 stops improvement from 5dmk2 to 6d comes from. I like 6d (center point) not denying it but some times folks do get carried away in the high ISO claims.

+1, i´am slowly getting used to it, but hey, i can hardly blame them they are enjoying their new gear!

Sorry, I meant its cleaner at the same ISO settings,
You can raise the ISO setting from 3200 to 6400 and have the same noise, and even
higher ......

I compare my 60D to my new 6D and, shooting JPG, I get an two stops (high-ISO), perhaps a bit more if the exposure and subject matter are just right. I would expect those moving from a 5DII would get a bit less. But I don't want to rain on anyone's parade. If you are seeing three stops, I am happy for you. Enjoy it while you can. You'll want the 6DII in about 3 years because it will be so clean at ISO 204,800.
