Hello, bought 2nd hand 1D3. Mint condition. Serial number falls in "defective" range. Maybe you can tell me, how to test AF system? From most quickest AF lens I have 70-200 IS II, 135L and 300 2.8L IS. Please share info, how to do test, while I can return it within few days.

Thanks.

Congrats on the purchase Shift. Best way: go outside on a nice sunny day and do some real world shooting of items with strong contrast, sharp edges, texture, patterns, lots of contrast, some detailed signage. Shoot at a variety of apertures, high shutter speeds.... you'll know pretty quickly if all is well. Enjoy!:D

Didn't Canon put stickers (a blue or white one I think) on 'repaired' bodies?

sapearl: gave today a try, but it is rainy so made iso3200, and done 1/1000-1/2000 shots of moving cars. Results are mixed ... Used ai servo, but made only single frames. Heard that problem is when you are bursting? I heard it too late. Is it true? What are typical situations where you can see infamous 1D3 AF system bug?

nellyle: pulled out battery, but i don't see in battery compartment any dots. And as far as I know it never went to Canon service.

I think the problems occur when you use any of the outer AF points in AI Servo. I've went back to considering this camera again. I'm a big One Direction Fan so having a camera with a 1D in it will compliment my fave band..............

The AF issues had to do with motion toward or away from you and also, if I remember, was much worse in heated conditions, like convection currents rising from asphalt etc. The AF issues were very restricted to a set of conditions. Just shoot your camera normally and see what happens. You can check with Canon too, I believe.

It was only the outer focus points. Canon told me to test mine by mounting the camera on a tripod and then focusing on something static rotating to each outer focus point and taking a shot. If you have any shots out of focus then it needs to be sent in and Canon will fix it for free.

Taking photos of anything moving won't tell you if you have the "focus" problem as there are a lot of other variables to consider. If your camera passes the test above then play around with tracing speed, focus point assist, etc to find what works best for you. Here are a couple of websites with information that might help you configure your settings:

Agree with all the points above. With static subjects should be pretty easy to spot any AF issues (including micro adjustments that might be needed), testing servo AF on moving subjects gets tricky.
My 1D3 is also inside the range and has been in to Canon for all the fixes (including a fatal Error 99 bug). I have included a pic of the battery compartment - I believe the 2 dots on the left indicate the sub mirror fix. Canon has been good to deal with here, even with a second hand camera so I'm sure they will look after you if you need to send it in.

Congrats on the new cam :)

Just call Canon and ask if the recalls and updates have been applied to that serial number.

I clearly know that it wasn't applied. Camera is ex rental camera. They brought it to Canon CS, but they asked if someone has any problems with it. They said, that no one complained. Canon than said that there is no need to do anything ...

Then what are you worried about. Go out and shoot the camera like you normally would. The 1D3 is a great camera that has suffered from over-hyped internet drama.
