Does this (external link) look too good to be true for legit Canon LP -E6 batteries? Could they really sell these for that much less than what B&H can? (Yes, I've read the stickies)

I'm done with 3rd party-- SterlingTek, Watson, whatever. I know folks say they've had no problems, but I didn't either-- until I did. ST batteries showing a full charge and completely dying after 5-10 min. of use. Sticking with originals from here on out.
Thanks!

I've had 4 LP-E6 batteries from eBay China for over two years now. No problems. I just made sure I bought the "microchipped" version so I can use my OEM charger and my camera can read it. I paid less than $10 for each.

I bought third party batteries for all my cameras from eBay (china) and I've never had any problems.

I would be wary about buying discount 'canon' branded batteries for cheap. If you're looking for something cheaper than canon retail then go for a trusted third party brand such as Sterlintek.

Don't confuse fake with third party. Fake is unknown. It could be a plastic box with some weights in it, it could be a substandard design that holds a poor charge and is at risk of catastrophic over heating, or it could be a rebranded third party battery that they sell for an extra $10 for no good reason. People making fake products and claiming to be another brand don't care about quality, they care about you buying their cheap thing thinking it is something different.

Third party has an actual reason to care about the quality of their product. They're standing on their own name, and releasing a poor or substandard product lowers the value of their name. They are totally different from people producing unofficial canon branded gear.

Yes, sorry to confuse the matter, I probably shouldn't have brought up the different issue of third party batteries.
My concern with this online retailer was if they were offering counterfeit batteries. I would never buy a battery from ebay, esp. if it was $10, regardless of how many others have had no issues with them.

If anyone has dealt with this retailer, please let me know of your experience, otherwise it's back to trusted-and-true B&H.

Also, how old are the batteries that were giving you issues? Batteries DO wear out over time, and depending on how they're calculating charge they will appear to be 'full charge' but die exceptionally fast. If you've gotten several years out of them, then it may simply be that it is time to replace them with newer batteries.

Even Canon cells will do that eventually.

they were years younger than the two Canons I bought with my 5DII 5+ years ago. The Canons still show their (compromised) holding/recharging capability accurately in the battery info menu, while the SterlingTeks say 100% all the way.

Not to knock them, the ST's served me well for a short while, but I need more accurate info, even for my amateur use, and they simply seemed to not last as long as the Canons.

I used to be very skeptical about third-party batteries until I tried Wasabi batteries. These are made in China but the premium cells are from Japan. I first started using these for my Canon XA10 camcorder. Worked as good as the OEM or better, so when I recently upgraded my camera from 40D to 5D3, I purchased a Wasabi kit that included 2x LP-E6 batteries and a charger for just $29.99.

While I fully understand your frustration with third-party batteries, you might want to take another look at the Wasabi. Even if you end up being disappointed in the end, I'm sure you'll still end up with $29.99 worth of good use out of them.

By the way, the battery capacity gauge, too, has been flawlessly accurate in both my camcorder and the camera.

So really not one of you read his question? he made it clear that he wanted no 3rd party ones. all he is asking is if the one in the link is genuine.

Well, congratulation for being the only one who was able to comprehend the OP's question. You just earned a gold star on your forehead.

Thanks, Moose. Given all the back-and-forth in that thread, you only get a bronze star-- but definitely not on your forehead!

Maybe I'll just buy one and check it out-- It has to look good, and be able to register within the camera.

Thanks for your help, guys! :)

I can't speak for the LP-E6 as I don't have a camera that takes them. However, over the years, I have used the previous incarnation (BP 511) quite a bit. I had 3 Canon originals (2 dead + 1 barely working) and 5 cheap ripoffs which are all working perfectly and give longer life than the Canon ones ever did!
I also have a ripoff LP-E4 ( for 1D4, DX etc) that gives about 2/3rds the life of the genuine Canon battery but is 1/6th the price - it also came with a very handy (if slow) mains/car charger!
I am afraid of buying Canon Batteries - not the fakes!

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
