I'm looking at getting a trigger for my 6D, and currently have a 430II EX flash although I'm looking at adding one maybe two more flashes sometime in the future.

I have been looking at both the canon triggers and delving into the flash photography world, and I right in saying that if I get the ST-E3-RT that I would also need to buy a receiver for my external flash, or will it still fire with out? (I assume it's a radio transmitter only and not IR?) It's only going to be for home personal use at the moment, so would I also be better suited just getting the ST-E2? I'm not really planning on doing any outdoor shots until I get confident and comfortable with flash photography.

I've only really looked at cannon for now, are there any other recommendations people can give?

Thanks!

ST-E3-RT will work with the new 600EX-RT and the equivalent flash from Yongnuo. The ST-E2 will work but it's IR. Look into Yongnuo 622c transceivers. Work great and inexpensive with full ETTL capability.

At the moment, the only flash that can be paired with the ST-E3-RT is the Canon 600EX-RT. No receiver exists to work with the ST-E3 and another flash. Steve's recommendation is spot-on for someone looking to get their feet wet. The ST-E2 is old (and crippled) technology.

Awesome, thanks guys, are there any others out there that should be considered? Better quality, better value? Or what ever else there is to consider.

Get yourself some YN622c triggers. Full ETTL using radio signals not visual light pulses.

I agree with everyone else. Get the YN622C's. They are inexpensive and work great. Nothing else compares at that price point. They even hold up well compared against more expensive triggers.

I got a set of 3 of these to use with both my 430exiis. Only had them an hour or so but I'm already impressed!

I've had fantastic luck with Phottix Strato. You can use it to trigger the shutter, too, which is cool if you're interested in remote cameras at some point. Very affordable, very easy to use.

Phottix also has their Ares series trigger now, which is cheaper because it has fewer frills.

Of course the standard for pros is Pocket Wizard.

Pocket Wizard Plus III is great

And the Pocket Wizard Plus X is their fairly newly introduced entry-level/basic remote that is more affordable and easier to use.

The reason I much prefer Phottix to Yongnuo is that you can buy Phottix from Adorama, who will stand by the product much more than anywhere you're going to find Yongnuo triggers for sale. If you're going to go the route of the very inexpensive Chinese triggers (and there's nothing wrong with that, I did until recently), I'd prefer to at least get them from a very reputable retailer instead of Aamzon or eBay or anywhere else. I think the Phottix triggers are built a little better than Yongnuo, too.

They look pretty good bang for buck, the only problem is the only place I can get them from is going to be eBay or Amazon! I'm in the UK and can't seem to see them anywhere other than eBay! I'll perhaps stick with the cheaper option for now, and if they aren't unto standard, I'll give them a try! Thanks!

I agree that the Phottix Stratos triggers are extremely well made but it should be noted that they are manual only triggers vs. the 622's offering both ETTL and Manual control. As far as country of manufacture, the Phottix equipment is made in China as well. Now that I think about it a good amount of my Canon equipment is made in China. :):) If I lived in NY I'd completely agree on the advantage of Adorama for support but I've found PhotoGadget.com to be completely reliable seller of Yongnuo equipment and they offer free air shipping to the US. I've bought a good amount of stuff online from Adorama. B&H is also great. But other reliable online dealers do exist.

Nothing is wrong with eBay, I was just stating that would be one of two places I would have to buy from. I love ebay, it's saves me literally thousands!

Isn't just about everything manufactured in China now? I know most the electrical stuff I own is!
