That should work; but you're going to want a CPL in there, somewhere, as well, most likely

Yea,

Can't decide if I want to just get a 77mm circular one that screws on, or try and get a plate that does it. They're very expensive.

I want the B+W one, it's $100. But it doesn't fit into the plate system. It's a screw on. Not really interested in having both a plate (for over $200 it seems) and a good screw on like that. Might have to find a way to get a big one and just adapt it. I'd like a screw on simply because it'll be useful when not using plates or anything and just needing the CPL in general (which will mostly involve my 67mm filter lenses). Only scaling to 77mm for my ultrawide.

Very best,

The problem you run into trying to adapt a screw-on CPL to the panel filters is that you're connecting two things that spin freely, which makes separating them nigh impossible at times...

Not saying it isn't a valid way to go; just warning that it can lead to headaches and isn't a pleasant use experience. I tried it once, because I'd already shelled out for the BW screw-on, and then went and tracked down the square one for use with the Lee kit.

Unfortunately, when moving into special shooting gear, photography just isn't bank account friendly...

Heya,

True.

I may just have to suck it up. I definitely want a 67mm CPL for normal use. I guess I'll do the ND filters first. And get the polarizer plate later on when I can.

Very best,

I feel your pain MalVeauX.. I want that Lee CPL as well but I just can't fit it into the budget anytime soon. It's the only piece of my Lee kit that I'm missing. Wish there was a decent alternative that was cheaper and easier to find.

I hope I'm not too late seeing this thread. If Lee is too expensive for you, you can get knockoffs for much less.

A comparison of the two holders (click on the images for captions):

Filter-wise, Hitech are decent, but I had their pro-stop 10 stopper, and mine leaked a lot of IR, leading to a horrid red cast over my photos. I returned it.

For my 10-stop, I decided to go the screw-in route, since it is much cheaper. I got the Haida Slim Pro II MC off ebay for under $50. It is very good for the price, there is a flickr set dedicated to it where you can see the results:

And here, I've shown how to do a DIY solution to using a regular CPL with the Lee-style holder:

That's one helluva clever solution there, Tom. Hat's off to you on that one.

Thanks, but I can't take credit for it, I saw someone who was using that setup, and just decided to make a step-by-step guide for it :)

Hey guys, need your help.
I am not a specialist on filters (yet) but I still want to protect my glass.:p

I need a 77mm size filter, either UV or clear, solely for the purpose of protecting my glass.
I found some on Henry's (canadian retailer) as well as some on ebay.
The confusion is that the ones on ebay are more then twice as cheap and seem to be from the same brand ....
Do you guys know which ones are better?

I am debating between these ones.
1) Henr's (Canadian retailer, the expensive priced ones)

You don't need either of them to protect your glass, just keep the lens hood on and cap, and that will be protection enough, even if you drop it. The UV or clear filters do nothing to improve your photography. A UV may have been necessary in the film days, but for digital it is not. Save your $$.

Well I don't use filters on my current kit lenses, (and yes, I do use a Hood on them and think its a very good protection) but I might be just scared to use a $1,000+ lens without the extra little bit of protection.

On the other hand I have read that lens front elements made today are actually quiet resistant to scratches and other damages, so maybe you are right, I don't need any filters ...

No filters. It doesn't make sense to put a cheap piece of glass between your subject and your lens. Cheap lens or expensive lens.

Glass is much harder to damage than skin; how often does the front end of your camera gear come in contact with something that you worry would scratch or cut your hand?

Issues of filter or no filter aside. Henry's is expensive. In their defense though, they will price-match to local (same province) bricks and mortar shops. I generally price match to Aden Camera at Henrys.

I prefer the B+W MRC filters. They have no perceptible impact on IQ, and do a great job of protecting against scratches, dust, water, sand etc... But I would buy them from a reputable retail store, not eBay. There are too many fakes out there to trust eBay for filters, even top rated sellers.
