And before you reply and say you want your lens to work stright out of the box, well if thats the way you feel you are best sticking to Canon, but for the sake of £35 for the dock, all the AF issues will go away, and in my book its worth the small bit of hassle at the start.

Each to their own though, you will always get Sigma haters etc

Might be worth mentioning that even if you stick with Canon, your lens may not work straight out of the box. I've tried and tested over 20 lenses from different brands (not counting MF lenses), only 3 didn't work properly out of the box. All 3 were Canon.

Yet I don't go around disparaging the Canon brand and I still own more Canon lenses than any other brand. Why? Because I choose the best tool for the job. Sometimes that is Canon, other times that is another brand.

Even at $1000 if its competing in terms of quality and IQ with the 50L its a good price IMO. Only time will tell though to see if Sigma have done it again

I plan to get it. I was not impressed with the 50L. Perhaps if it had a dock like my Sigma 35? In any regard, I miss having a 50 so I look forward to the Sigma Art version. Their 35 has been the best lens I've ever used.

Exactly. I had mentioned on the recent "sigma lottery" thread that my 35L needed MA too. I think people just look for problems more with the sigmas

You know what's annoying? that there's still no announcement on availability or price! I want to know, damn it!

Let thedigitalpicture, dpreview and a few other review sites get their hands on the new Sigma 50 and report back with their findings first. Then go to a brick and mortar store and try it out for yourself taking into consideration the pros and cons of the lens being reported by those reviews. Worry about cost last as the overall performance will most likely be the determining factor in whether or not most will buy the lens. I am positive Sigma knows if they price it to close to the 50L it won't sell well no matter how awesome a f/1.4 lens is.

Unless it's a Zeiss lens of course.;)
Gotta love the Zeiss lens and that German manufacturing.

Zeiss lenses are manufactured by Cosina in Japan. FYI. ;)

And as long as the performance is good I don't think Sigma would have any problems selling a $1500 50mm 1.4. It would appear that they are going to attempt to offer Zeiss Otus image quality at a much lower price. It should sell as long as the performance lives up to rumour.

Many are made in Japan but the more sought after and desireable lens are from Germany. My Schneider Vari-ND glass is a result of the German manufacturing process and it is second to none in optical quality.

I also use Zeiss equipment here in the states and am always impressed with how much more professional the Germans are in how they present themselves and with their almost anal manufacturing guidlines we need to follow in order to do business the company.

Have to admit though on the rare occasions when I get a chance to work with a Japanese citizen who lives in Canada and works for a German company doing business on American soil it makes me chuckle just tinking about it.

If the Sigma 35 is a reliable benchmark at all (which it should be), it will be closer to $800, and I would totally buy it=P

50mm's generally cost less than 35mm's. Now, this lens is a super complex optical design, so you might be right. But generally speaking, 35/1.4's cost more than 50/1.4's.

Actually you're probably right...as the Sigma is a retro-focus lens and likely a more complicated design.

$600 for something aimed past the 50L and you draw the line for canons next 1.4?

I have super high hopes...like negligible from the ziess would make it worth $1200 if they really hit that mark. It will be under a grand probably, and at that, I am in if it Is what they proclaim.

Everything is relative.
Gear: 6D, Unholy Trinity:twisted: (24Lii, sigma 50A, 135L), and for the other ends of the spectrum, sigmaEX 14mm2.8 and sigmaEX 100-300F4.
