Best off camera remote shutter release device?

Hi. I am looking for a good off camera remote (or long cable) shutter release to take immediate shots or on delay. I would still like to use flash so do not want anything sitting on the hotshoe. It's for the 5D mk3 Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

RC-6?

Canon or "Canon" works the same within 10-30 feet.

I got a cheap Phottix wireless release of Ebay five years ago, at a small fraction of the cost of the Canon. I don't use it much but two weeks ago I dug it out of the closet and it still works seamlessly. The receiver has a male connector to sit on the hot shoe but that's just a convenient place to put it, it could dangle down or be secured to the body with a rubber band.
The problem with an infra-red release like the RC-6 is that you have to be out in front of the camera.

£8 from Amazon. Get an original as there are loads of fakes.
Nb it is not radio triggered but infra red so you need to point it at the sensor on the front of the camera.

But as you can set the 2sec timer, and instant. If behind the camera, fire it from in front and move your hand.

IMO it works every time and the little case holds it on the single camera strap. I had heard outside it could get messed up by strong sunlight. Never experienced a single misfire myself!

No brainer its Canon.
Also will start and stop video. Useful for family birthday vids etc.

The only negative is Amazon want £10 worth of orders to qualify for free delivery......buy some batterys.

+1 Yup.

Not always. I have had a couple of cheap wired releases (both long cable and short) from eBay, and they have worked flawlessly. The one radio-controlled remote release I bought from a Chinese vendor on eBay didn't work at all, and when I asked for a refund, they only offered to sell me another for half price (which I refused). It was cheap, so not a big deal.

So I would continue to use the cheap wired ones, but for a radio-controlled one, I use a programmable Hahnel.

IR are limiting
I'm using the Yongnuo RF603, they work great.
I would always go RF.

I was referring to the RC-6 clones. They are IR not wired or radio. I also can use ST-E3-RT with 600EX-RT, or my PWs or Youngnuo triggers, or tethered to PC, Mac or mobile android devise.

I keep a RC-6 in each camera bag, so I always have one handy, for $2 and it's small size, it's a no brainier. IR is not the best, limited range, easy blocked with interference and needs line of sight, but it does the job.

The 6D with iPhone wifi connection is the best solution for me, but not much help to the OP

I got the triggertrap for christmas. pretty neat device, which hooks directly into your Iphone or Android Phone.
It gives you a lot of nice options to play with, plus you can buy any audio extender and it will give you a longer cable.

With the trigger trap, you can even clap and it will take a picture

Triiggertrap looks interesting, would have been nice if it worked via wifi instead of dongle tethered
