I was trying out a new gimble head (my first) for my tripod, and knowing that the deep freeze was on its way in only a few hours, I ran down to the lake and started learning.

Personally I am not really a fan of gulls. They are o.k., but for me, nothing special. However, they make great training material. Practicing BIF on gulls is the only way to go (at least in the winter). There are a lot of them, they are concentrated in small areas. They fly somewhat predictably, and if you miss one, then maybe you get a chance at one of the other 50,000 in the same harbor.

Must say, the gimble head was awesome. Best money I have spent in a while. I picked up a Opteka GH1 for only $150 from Amazon. It was very stiff, but a quick shot of Teflon Dry Wax lube into each of the 2 pivot/rotation points, freed it up immediately. It is now super smooth.

Be kind on the images... the weather was not good.

Great work.
Worst thing about gulls is IDing them, all very confusing.

Very good job, I agree with Lester on IDing them.

Absolutely love the composition and soft lighting of image 1. Great job.

I struggle with mine for bif's, so that is a good thought, practice on gulls. You did good.
