well, it's an L lens and opens up to f/1.4 and gives you a wider angle of view than your 40mm...it's bigger and heavier too :)

If you are ready to buy the 35L, also research the Sigma 35/1.4 and the Canon 35/2 IS.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Well, I have the 35/2 IS and I love it. The IS is phenomenal and the IQ is stellar. I paid about $520 for it, so less than half the price of the 35L. The Siggy 35/1.4 also gets rave reviews and is considered the sharpest of the bunch. Check out the image thread for the Sigma, lots of very satisfied people there. It's also cheaper than the 35L. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them, it is simply a question of the tradeoffs - F1.4 vs. F2 and IS, Canon vs. Sigma, etc.

35L is a great lens! If that's what you want, go for. I'm sure you'll be thrilled by it.

I somewhere saw that the 35mm sigma art is even slightly better. Ive heard it many times and saw a test image where the canon showed a little more chromatic aberations. And for somewhat of almost half the price id better jump on the sigma. Except if you're a red-ring horny canon fanboy ;)

This is an excellent lens, but I believe you get more for your money with the Sigma or the Canon 35mm f2 IS. Why pay more for old technology? If you need 1.4, get the Sigma. Reviews indicate the Sigma has better IQ than the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 and the Zeiss has better IQ than the Canon 1.4. Then again, if you don't require 1.4, the Canon 35mm f2 IS would be the best choice.

Have both and hard to tell them apart in pictures. Sigma is tad sharper than the L (@f1.4) but sigma under-exposes little (so maybe not f1.4) and vignetting more. AF little better on the L also.

I got the 35 f/2 IS. Less than 1/2 the cost of the 35L, and I don't need f/1.4. If Canon had made the 24IS an f/2, I'd have that one, too.
