I'm hoping someone could provide sample images or links to images of studio portraits with a simulated shadow across the background and/or models face using gobos with an explanation of the equipment used.

I have a Source Four Jr ellipsoidal zoom which does a nice job but it's not that bright which makes it difficult to mix with my Einstein strobes. And it also burns pretty hot.

I contacted the Paul C. Buff company and they do not make an attachment that would allow their units to create a distinct shadow but they suggested two other manufacturers that might have the solution.

The first one was the Tallyn's F-16 Turbospot Plus and the second was a Pattern Projector by Denny's Manufacturing. I cannot find any sample images where either of these units were used.

Any links and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've looked at Light Blaster before, looks very interesting but I don't know if I would get my money's worth out of it. Seems like I would use it for a couple shoots then it would gather dust.

I've used a big piece of cardboard as a gobo before, with simple shapes cut out to project on the wall - including emulating a Bat-Signal spotlight for a Catwoman shoot. In that case, the bat logo across the model's face and body just wasn't very flattering, so I didn't keep those. I did remove the bat logo to make a nice round police-spotlight effect, which worked for what I wanted.

If you're referring to the Light Blaster, Ralph, here's a rather lukewarm review:

I'm curious as well. I've been contemplating the Tallyn's units as well but I've never seen anyone review or discuss it. In the meantime, one thing you could do is use an actual prop to create a silhouette by placing the prop in between the subject and background and lighting the background but not the prop. Or if you have a lot of room you can use a tight grid to hit the background with some hard light and use a cookie or actual prop to create the shadow pattern. It's something I've seen done but I don't have that kind of room myself.

Stephen Eastwood mentioned this device some time ago:

Perhaps it's adaptable to something other than the specified SP Studio Systems flash units.

Interesting. For the price it might be worth cutting the mount off and riveting a new one on for my bees. :)

If it's just for a couple shots photoshop might be the easier solution. I've used such a thing in a friend's studio, probably something from Profoto. Looked a bit like a snoot and he had several sets of shapes to push in (like in a slide projector, a machine you could also use). Of course they go over the models as well unless you have enough room to project your shape behind the model.

I guess you could also construct something with a strong lamp and selfmade shapes, just don't set your studio on fire.

I'd explore such options before buying something if you don't think you'll use it again.

It's designed to be mounted on a strobe like this SP 920:

I'm thinking it might be easily adaptable to the Cheetah Light CL-360 or CL-180 using an SMDV DA-03 adapter.

See? Now Stan's got me thinking ...

I wonder how creative one could get using this as the lens.

yeah, I saw that but then reading the comments people are using it with Einsteins and Alien Bees.:cool: It's cheap enough it might be worth looking into, but I may still hold out for the Tallyns unit.
