Sigma, you set the standard for me when I bought your S35 13 months ago, I have been hanging out for more DG Global Vision lenses ever since.
I just received the new 24-105 Art, its fantastic! Other than a little vignetting, I can't fault it.
Sharp Sharp Sharp, vibrant colours and a quality build. Cant wait to buy the recently announced S50 art now. And please, send us the 85 art.

No offense intended, but on my phone the images you have posted appear just a bit front focused. May need to dial it in again if others see it as well.

Thanks for the heads up. I do intend to recheck the calibration. In the last image, it does appear to be front focused, I'll have to check where the lens focused. I felt it may still need a click forward after comparing other shots, already at -3

My problem is, I'm impatient when I get a new toy, I like to play and rush through the set up, so it could well do with some adjustment. I'm over due to re celebrate all my lens, so looks like a good time to spend a day tuning, cleaning and re assessing my tool kit.

How was the AF? I skipped out on buying the Sigma 24-70 because of all the AF horror stories I heard, which has made me a bit scared of the brand.

Damian - can you compare it to the Canon 24-105?

The 24-70 is prior to Sigma's new Concept range, I hear many similar reservation about the brand from others having poor experience with many of their lenses.
I have been a Canon fan for 11 years, a couple years ago I bought the 120-300, I needed a sports lens and couldn't justify the price of a 300 prime. I was over the moon with its performance.
It was my first non canon lens in over 8 years.
Then I read about Sigma announcing they had restructured the company, it was turning around its image and quality control with its new concept range.
So I bought their first lens released in this new style, the 35 art, this lens gave me a wow factor, over the last 12 months I have read all but a few who equally love it.
During this time, Sigma have released other concept lenses, but not For FF (other than the 120-300), all reports would suggest they are also sensational quality with next to no issues.
I just now bought the newly released 24-105, it's to early to suggest reliability claims, but the quality and images are fantastic. But, Sigma have been true to their claim of a new reliable quality image, so I have no reason to doubt different with this lens, in fact I now have great confidence in Sigma in so much soI have no hesitation in buying a new release.

All my Sigma lenses focus at a similar speed, they are not near as fast as my 135L or 24-70II, but they are not what I would consider slow, they all seem to be consistently accurate though, to me this is important. I only received the 24-105 yesterday, and have only done limited testing, but I have no reason to suggest at this stage that it will not be consistent and accurate.

I don't have an EF 24-105, sorry.
I was considering buy it for studio convenience, and did mount one on my camera for a few test shot, but when I learnt of the Sigma, I didn't consider it any further. At f/8 it seemed quite good, which was fine for studio, I didn't test wide open.

I also compared it at the time I bought my 24-70II, at that time, I felt it was not as sharp at f/4, but other wise quite good, again it was just a quick in store test.
From all reviews I read, the 24-70 trumps the 24-105, plus you get the extra stop, so I bought it.

From the short testing with the new Sigma, I feel it is as good as the 24-70II, in fact I had to look at the META data to see which was which. I'm thinking my 24-70 is going to see far less use, I wasn't expecting that, I just wanted a convenient studio lens. IMO, I feel the Sigma is a better lens, but with out side by side, I don't like making such claims.

I would also be keen to see how it compares for lens curvature distortion, lens flare, vignetting, chromatic aberration. I would be suppressed if the canon has more vignetting, but not suppressed if Sigma wins in the others.

why would you not consider the 24-105L any further after learning of the sigma? given it's $150 more, I'm curious as to what sold you on it over the canon, especially given you'll be using it at f8?

Because I was so pleased with my S35
The ability to adjust with the Doc rather than having to send to a service agent. Being able to do this for free, as regular as I feel the need with out down time is a real bonus.
And from all reports of other concept lenses, they have been just that little bit better than others, giving me confidence that the Sigma would be at least equal.

To me the Doc feature is worth $150, but in saying that, here in AU at the same store I purchase the Sigma, the Canon is $90 dearer, it was even more, they only just reduced it when they got stock of the Sigma.
It was around $1300, now $ 968, the sigma cost me $879.

Going more negative would introduce more front focusing. Remember that positive values add distance and negative shortens distance. If it is front focusing a little bit, it is because you have it at -3.

Yes, it was back focusing, hence adjusted to -3

I was wondering the same thing. All the initial reviews I saw said it's pretty much the same level as the L, if not a little below it depending on the FL. The Sigma is certainly no slouch, but you can find the L for $700 or less pretty easily in brand new condition (I know because I just sold mine for $650 and it had only been used a handful of times )

Happy you like it though, I'm definitely curious to see what's next from Sigma
