I'm considering the purchase of a G1x, but am concerned about the AF speed, which has been reported as being glacial. I am currently shooting with an Olympus e-p1 with the 17mm kit lens, which is not fast by any stretch of the imagination. I prefer shooting wide open at the 28-35mm range, so I'm not concerned about the fact that the minimum aperture is so much higher at the long end. I do have two kids... One is 3 and the other is 6 months old. Most of of my photography today is focused on my kids, although I also enjoy shooting documentary and street photography.

I have used Canon cameras in the past, and I currently own and use a G7 (waterproof housing is great in the pool and at the beach!), so I am very aware of the image quality that comes with a canon product. I am also considering the eos m, although I would prefer the build quality and convenience of the G series cameras.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I owned a G1x, and the images were as good as my dslr. For your children's age I think it would be perfect. Actually the canned modes, sports, I believe they even have kids mode, work great also if your not familiar with dslr settings, as you get mor familiar you could play with those.
I bought mine for vacations shoots. Images were fantastic. I only sold it because it was a little larger for my purposes, and if I'm not lugging my dslr, I want something to fit in my pocket, so I bought a sony rx100.
Focus speed is fine on the G1x..

Any chance you (or anyone else) could compare it to the G7's focus speed?

You might get some answers from the I-R reviews/performance tab pages;

As much as I love my G1X, for my almost 3 year old daughter, it's hard to get clear consistent pictures. For everything else, it's a great camera (except of true macro shots, which you should know).

To be honest, for your needs I would bypass the two Canon cameras you mention and grab any Micro 4/3 camera that came out in 2011 or later instead, although I would recommend not keeping your existing 17mm lens because it's focusing speed is limited by the lens design and not the bodies.

I respond here for the first time. I think the G1X is one of the secrets of photography. The photos here are great.
I have a question. I intend to buy the G1X. The question is whether there is a Bulb setting. Not according to the manual. Only on dpreview someone has found the setting.

Can anyone confirm this?

No Bulb Setting on the G1x, but you do get a very generous 60secs compared to other cameras. I.m not too sure but I think you can do multiple exposures at 60secs a piece, will have to check that out to confirm.

Canon 5D mk3, 50mm 1.4, 17-40L, 70-200L, 100-400L, Canon 100L macro, Canon 2 x G1X, Speedliite 430 EX all supported by Gitzo and Benro.

Hi Judder Man,

Thanks for response. You say "No Bulb Setting on the G1X."
You mean you have checked the following: (from dpreview) "If you are using the rear dial to scroll through shutter speeds (in manual mode), you can scroll all the way down to the slowest speed, which I saw was 60 seconds, however, keep rolling past that and you should see a "B".

I just checked this; nope, there is no 'B' beyond 60 seconds. Well, not in Shutter priority (Tv), or M, at any rate.

ETA - Just tried again, given the certainty of the dpreview poster. Nope. Love to know what his medication is . . .

Indeed, on dpreview are two people who have found the setting. I had no reason not to trust, but wanted a third confirmation. It's a strange situation!
Are there G1X with and without Bulb? I put the question, to be sure, on the "Canon G1X Users Images" page. (I live in Holland, hope my English is readable.)

I wonder whether some people are using CHDK (external link)to extended the length of time the shutter is open (beyond the 60 sec. limit)?

This G1X user on dpreview says... that the bulb is 2 MINUTES and 9 SECONDS ...

Someone else says on dpreview "go all the way to the left on the shutterspeed wheel to find the "B".

I went umpteen clicks past 60" to no avail.
So, next, RTFM. Nope.
Went into menu to see if there was anything there. If there is, I can't find it.

I really don't think you can go past 60". But I'm open to persuasion.
