It would be nice to be able to adjust the camera for composition without one hand holding the phone.

The Tether Tools Look Lock (external link) seems like it might work quite well. It is a little steep in price, but if the quality is good it may be worth it. Only thing is that the clamp it comes with can only accommodate devices up to 3" in width. So a tablet would not work.

Are there any other options out there that folks might know of or be using?

Have a look on Amazon there are a lot of hot shoe mount ball heads and phone holders that attatch to those. Mounting a tablet on the hot shoe ... well thats not something I would do, I am working on an attachment to connect the tablet to a tripod leg.

Likewise. Either that or the accessory mount on my Induro 314. A work in progress.

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Sort of like this except for a smartphone? I also wouldn't use a hotshoe.

Thanks all. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy 3 and a Galaxy Tab. I have been using the phone, but it would be nice to have the big screen of the tablet handy. I suppose that it might be too big and/or heavy to mount to the camera hot shoe mount but might be quite workable on the tripod leg, as all of you have suggested.

Thanks, will search on Amazon. Hope you share your design or pics of your setup when ready :).

What arm is that? Would the clamp be able to fit a smartphone-sized device?

The one holding an iPad is a Manfrotto Variable Friction Magic Arm. The smaller one on the right is an 11" Variable Friction Adjustable Magic Arm and Hot-Shoe Mount by Kamerar. Both of these are attached to the tripod legs with Manfrotto Super Clamps.

If you want to hold a smartphone-sized device using either of these magic arms, you'd have to find a mounting kit (with female thread on the back) designed for such devices. I'll see if I can locate one.

Looks like this "Square Jellyfish Smartphone Spring Tripod Mount" would do:

They also have a bracket in the event that you need to use the hotshoe for a flash or LED light.

I believe they are in the process of making a bigger and sturdier version for tablets. Waiting for them to finalize it and to review it.

Interesting. That gorilla-pod like bendy arm is a nice advantage, assuming that it is stiff enough to hold the phone without flexing.

Its stiff and won't flex on its own.
