I can layer up like crazy for the top and stay warm but no matter what combo I try my feet seem to get cold. What type of socks do you wear? And for pants? I do wear long john's but that doesn't seem to help at times. Any other tips? Less restricting for movement the better of course but rather be overly warm than getting cold.
One thing really holding me back lately with these single digit temperature to shoot at night.
Heya,
I wear Kamik snow boots. Waterproof. Insulated liner. 10" high, so they are mid-shin. Freaking amazing boots developed in Quebec, where it gets cold (I used to live there). Inexpensive, most other boots of this quality and insulation/proofing are $200+. These can be had for like $65. I bought them on Amazon. They size normally too. I wear normal socks with mine. But if you want more insulation, just get some wool socks.
For pants, put something that is tight to the skin underneath. Long johns tend to be loose unless you get them too small, and then you will be uncomfortable. Look at thermal tights. People use them for running. Stack layers of very thin, tight material. Alternatively, you get snow pants. They are dense with a lot of fiber with air in the material. Snow pants are often "ski pants" and similar items. You just wear long johns or thermal tights underneath, and you should be good. The key to keeping out cold is to keep layers of air between you and the outside wind/temp.
I wear a basic wool hat with ear flaps for my head. Pilot hats are awesome for keeping you warm.
I use youngstown gloves. They're inexpensive, but maintain enough dexterity for shooting (especially tripod/remotes which is what I do primarily at night anyways). They have some called "carpenter plus" gloves that have a few finger tips exposed, they are ideal for camera use.
Very best,
