I can layer up like crazy for the top and stay warm but no matter what combo I try my feet seem to get cold. What type of socks do you wear? And for pants? I do wear long john's but that doesn't seem to help at times. Any other tips? Less restricting for movement the better of course but rather be overly warm than getting cold.

One thing really holding me back lately with these single digit temperature to shoot at night.

I wear a pair of Carhartt Coveralls over a pair if sweats and long johns. I also place newspaper strips in the soles of my felt insulated boots. I have a pair of electric socks, they have a D cell battery pouch at the top of each sock. They work well but I've used Hot Hands packets(large) under my toes in my boots and they work just as well for about 3 hours. In single digits I think I'd pass unless I had some place nearby to go for breaks. I always take a thermos of hot coffee and sometimes hot soup too, especially on all-nighters.

This is my favorite cold weather item. As long as the wind isn't howling it's perfect for helping you stay warm. You'll want to bring a spare butane canister each night. I've seen these at a wide range of prices so look around, same with the butane canisters. Bass Pro carries these heaters and I'm sure many other outdoor shops.

Search for "Buuny Boots" on eBay. They're cheap and very effective. Add an inner-sole or two for comfort and a pair of thick wooly socks.
A cheaper, simpler suggestion from a Fairbanks local is to stand on several sheets of cardboard.

I cut out 2 pieces of emergency blanket, aka mylar, to the shape of my shoe sole. There just needs to be more insulation now, Ive been afraid it would make me sweat more but because I sit still I dont sweat much. the mylar helps out alot because it reflects the heat from your feet. The ground actually pulls alot of heat from your feet.

Awesome; thank you so much all. I'll take a look those options. Didn't think of insulating the boots as much as I have waterproof Carolina's.

Heya,

I wear Kamik snow boots. Waterproof. Insulated liner. 10" high, so they are mid-shin. Freaking amazing boots developed in Quebec, where it gets cold (I used to live there). Inexpensive, most other boots of this quality and insulation/proofing are $200+. These can be had for like $65. I bought them on Amazon. They size normally too. I wear normal socks with mine. But if you want more insulation, just get some wool socks.

For pants, put something that is tight to the skin underneath. Long johns tend to be loose unless you get them too small, and then you will be uncomfortable. Look at thermal tights. People use them for running. Stack layers of very thin, tight material. Alternatively, you get snow pants. They are dense with a lot of fiber with air in the material. Snow pants are often "ski pants" and similar items. You just wear long johns or thermal tights underneath, and you should be good. The key to keeping out cold is to keep layers of air between you and the outside wind/temp.

I wear a basic wool hat with ear flaps for my head. Pilot hats are awesome for keeping you warm.

I use youngstown gloves. They're inexpensive, but maintain enough dexterity for shooting (especially tripod/remotes which is what I do primarily at night anyways). They have some called "carpenter plus" gloves that have a few finger tips exposed, they are ideal for camera use.

Very best,

I've gone hypo three times, and each time it started with my feet. As a result, I'm now really, really cautious when out in the cold.

If it is bitterly cold, and I'm going to be static, I use 14" Sorel Glacier boots. They have an active rating of -100F/-73C. That's the active rating . . . I find they work well for static work to around -31F/-35C. I wear Wigwam Merino/Silk hiking socks.

For my bottom layers, I wear insulated running tights. Over those I wear heavy fleece pants. I wear Gore-Tex skipants over top of my fleece pants. Mobility isn't very good.

You have to be careful not to get too warm. If you start to perspire, you'll start to get cold. Bring a couple of pairs of socks so you can change into dry ones if you start to perspire. You should also have a lighter pair of boots on hand to change into if your feet get too warm. Presumably, the ones you drove to the site in one be a suitable backup pair. Most of the heavily insulated boots are not suitable for driving in . . . unless you've got tiny feet to begin with. The heavily insulated boots are a LOT larger than what you're probably used to wearing.

The best shoes for cold enviroments that I have used are no doubt Sorel Glacier boots. -30°C and I dont even have to wear wool socks!

But they weight a ton, so I wouldnt go hiking with them. :)

The best!!!! I ditched my cotton socks. I have slightly sweaty feet and these new socks are so damned toasty all the time... and never get wet. Love 'em.

+1 for SmartWool! All I wear, year round is SmartWool. I also love their long underwear and hats too.

This may be exaggerating, but where I am from Winter may as well be our best friend. Naturally, there's always snow, and winters usually don't get warmer than -20C average. With that kind of temperature, I don't care how ridiculous I look when I want to go out side and take pictures. I wear my snowboarding socks, which is usually made of wool and a lot longer than normal socks, and since I am a girl I have my Ugg boots. As for pants, honestly, I go out in snow pants with sweats underneath.
