I've been thinking of getting a 60D. Tonight I heard that they are made it China. Is that correct?
Thanks,
David

So what if it was? The CPU from the PC you typed this up on was probably made in China along with most of the other components.

Canon does have some factories in China, at least one of which produces cameras. They had some problems in 2012 with anti Japanese protesters, which hit the news.

I have no idea which cameras are built there, but it really wouldn't concern me. Canon have spread production to several other areas, after they were so badly hit by the tsunami in Japan, to minimise disruption from possible future events like that. They may be building some stuff in china, but that doesn't mean they aren't still operating the same quality control standards there as back home in Japan.

Japanese producers have long been using foreign factories to produce their goods. They still insist on Japanese quality and many run the factories the Japanese way (which came as quite a culture shock to British car workers, when Japanese auto giants started building cars in England).

News flash! We live in a global economy. My guess is that significant portions of everything are made in China, and Taiwan, and India, and Korea, and lots of other places I can't pronounce or spell. Jeez, there hasn't been an completely American-made car or television for over 30 years. I don't care if my 60D was made on the moon and assembled by Santa's Elves. I just want it to work.

While this may be true about a global econonomy, anyhing I have ever owned from China has been an inferior product. American is inferior too. I'll take German or Japanese.

That was my point. Significant chunks of your Canon, Tamron and Tokina equipment WERE made in China. Along with significant chunks of your car, computer, refrigerator, and yes, perhaps even your underwear. They may have been assembled in Japan, or Moline, Illinios. I am sure very few products, of any kind, are manufactured totally in any one country.

.

exactly. Both Nikon and Canon have factories here in Thailand. They are run by Japanese, but the Thais do most of the work. Everything is held to Japanese standards.

Off topic, but it was not only the tsunami. When we had the massive floods here a few years ago, it shut down both Nikon and Canon in northern Thailand for a few months, which in turn affected global production.

I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but if we have a manufacturer here, say Canon or Honda, there are no import taxes to add on to a product. That's really good since import taxes can be as much as 100%. I still had to pay more for my 5D3 here than in the US, but we are a much smaller market.

What is most important to you?

If you want an unquestionably competent camera, the Canon 60D will be a very good choice, based on images such as these generated by a 60D.

If you're concerned about the camera's country of origin, no unit may satisfy you. There are still people who say the world's best cameras come from Germany or Sweden.

Mine is Japan, acquired in summer of 2011 using Canon Loyalty Program (CLP). Since you live in Ohio you should definitely check out the CLP. Do a search using canon loyalty program and you should find the info.

By the way, I grew up in Lorain.

Mine is made in Japan.

"Made in China" doesn't always mean it is bad.

I am old enough to remember a time when "Made in Japan" meant it was junk. ;)
