Dear Board,

I am wondering if anyone here owns and uses one of the universal L brackets made by either of the companies mentioned?

I'd like to get something that fits a gripped 20D and a 1DMK2. I won't have a problem swapping a bracket from one body to another. I'd really like to find something that fits both to some degree rather than buy fitted brackets for both.

If you own one I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what you think? If you own a universal bracket from another company I'd appreciate hearing about that as well.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :D

I have a ProMedia Gear universal L bracket that I use with my 6D w/grip. The bracket must be loosened and turned to remove the battery tray which end loads. Not a big deal, especially considering that the bracket has built in storage for the allen wrench. This would, of course, not be an issue on a camera without grip or one with grip that rear loads batteries. The bracket is well made and I am pleased with it.

The following comments are based on the assumption that the universal L-bracket is designed for a camera without a grip.

If you want the lens to be centered over the head when shooting vertically or access to the ports on the side of the camera you will probably be disappointed using a universal L-bracket on a gripped camera or the 1D. If those things don't matter then a universal L-bracket will work fine.

I tried a Desmond universal L-bracket on my gripped 7D. It technically worked but the ports on the side of the camera were blocked and it was off balance shooting vertically. I ended up getting the appropriate Kirk L-bracket for a gripped 7D and am very happy.
