I just downloaded and started reading Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. I can't wait to get through all of it so that I can finally learn about photography (since I've been doing it for seven years).

I like this quote in the intro: "“I use the word auto is when I have a student named Otto”

Excerpt From: Peterson, Bryan. “Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition.” Amphoto Books, 2010-12-29.

I frequent a sausage kitchen by the name of Otto's. All their links are cooked manually. :-)

This doesn't make sense from a grammatical standpoint. Are you sure that this is correctly quoted? It seems as if there may have been more words in the sentence that are missing here in your quote.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Try this capitalization: “I use the word Auto IS when I have a student named Otto.”

Then "the word" should be "the phrase," but the sentence is now comprehensible. Maybe, though, the writer wasn't talking about IS. Look to the context.

PRONOUN ADVISORY: OhLook is a she. | A FEW CORRECT SPELLINGS: lens, aperture, amateur, hobbyist, per se, raccoon, whoa | Comments welcome

The subject of the sentence was dropped. It should read: "The only time I use the word auto is when I have a student named Otto."

We'll forgive Bryan Peterson's lack of quotation marks for the words "auto" and "Otto." His book is just too damned good to subject it to the Grammar Police's Nitpick Squad.

So, are you resigning your position as Captain of the Grammar Police?

Considering that this forum is home to multiple ethnic groups, economic groups and educational levels, it amazes me how many threads lately have descended to the level of picking apart someones ability to communicate in the written word.

With a little thinking, we can figure out what the person was trying to say - why do we need to intimidate and embarrass til they delete their posts or wander off to the cyclist/auto forum?
