Yes, the 6D AF absolutely sucks. That must be why there have never been any sharp images of kids ever taken with Cannon cameras prior to the 5D3 coming out.

Well... Reminds me of my rebel days. I upgraded from rebel to 60D and amazing how my outpoint problems went away. I feel like I do back then. Not saying it doesn't work but why waste shutters when you can nail it first time w/ cross point AF.

^

So I guess I should not post shots of my kids running/moving taken with my manual 50mm lens:lol:

I actually like moving targets and manual, it is so rewarding when you nail it:lol:. I take a lot of pics of my kids, and they are jittery and fast, and maybe it is because I am not an awesome photographer, but I find them the exact same level of difficulty to shoot with my old xsi, 60d and 6d...that level being not very difficult. It isn't like when I got a 60d I was getting so much better shots of kids playing. Plus kid shots are so casual, How do you enjoy your time with them if you are that locked into the AF of your camera?

The 6d outer points do suck though:(

Strangely, I was able to get sharp photos of moving children even in the early 80s using a manual focus Canon A-1.

Good choice! You will love the 5dmiii coming from a crappy autofocus system to an amazingly accurate and quick one!

I had the 5D, and when the 5D Mark II and Nikon D700 were both released at about the same time I was disappointed in Canon for sticking with the relatively weak AF system of the 5D/5D2 as compared to Nikon.

And yes, I had all kinds of people tell me I was stupid for wanting a better AF system.....as if every single person who has paid good money for high end cameras in order to get access to a better AF system is stupid or something. I got the same nonsense about how since they once got a good shot in 1972 with a manual lens, my quest for an AF system that hits all the time in all conditions is stupid.

But that's OK......I have a 1D Mark IV and a 5D Mark III. You know what? Those cameras are both really good at autofocus, which I appreciate and use. If you appreciate a good AF system, you will like the 5D Mark III.

If you enjoy the pleasure a blind squirrel gets when it occasionally finds a nut.....try using EOS lenses in pure manual mode all the time.

AF is why I skipped the 5DII and 6D when upgrading from my 5D. I got tired of having one effective AF point. Why buy another camera with the same limitation as the old one? Now with the 5DIII I can effectively focus and track targets with 41(?) points instead of 1. That's not to say I don't have plenty of great shots from the old 5D, but the 5DIII sure beats it in the AF department

Why didn't you buy the 5D3 in the first place?

You do know that it's a thousand dollars more for a reason, right? It's not the sensor or processor. It's the autofocus.

All of these comments are one of the main reasons i didnt even think about buying a 6d. Its a nice camera for the price, but it lacks so many features that would be missed after using the mark iii for a while.

Naw...Talley has been looking to buy a 5D3 for ever and since he doesn't shoot professional sports he's grasping at kids for justification and that's ok! If he really wants one of those monsters he should get it. Actually I'd pick the 3.2 inch lcd rational over running kids but thats just me. Just make sure you have lots of lights on Talley!

hm... I must have extraordinary skills... My 6D keeper rate is about the same as my 70D/7D. I don't have kids though. Still, I can shoot BIF with my 6D when I want to. I wonder if I had a 5DIII would my keeper rate go over 100%? :) Just kidding, congrats on the new camera.
