Was shooting some birds when I heard a loud noise and saw this beast of a plane. I know is Air Force but any more info on it?

It's classified as a heavy lifter - meaning that it can transport the military's heaviest fighting machines (such as the biggest tanks and helicopters) around the world. Also, it can take them (along with support equipment, personnel and troops) in and out of unimproved airfields in hostile environments. Super-capable aircraft, designed and built at Douglas Aircraft (now Boeing), in Long Beach, CA.

My son flew into Afghanistan a few times in these. He said they came in high and did a steep dive to the runway, then level off low and land.

I've experienced this as well. Quite a ride. For such a big plane these things can stop on a dime, they are capable of landing and taking off on strips that they really have no business being on. Makes them great for coming in and out of combat zones.

They utilize "blown flaps", the inboard flaps are constructed of titanium IIRC, to withstand the high temperatures from the turbine exhaust. Generates additional lift at low speeds and high angles of attack. Pretty slick !

I was up the hill earlier and took some images of the planes flying overhead as we were under the flightpath today. Most were the same-old same-old passenger flights but this one was different. Is it a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III? BTW this is a huge crop as the planes at all at altitude when they pass us.
