Canon 6D Does Skiing Shots

Over the last few months, I've been eyeing the 6D but I've been curious as to how the camera does skiing shots since that's 10-20% of what I shoot throughout the year. Well, I can report that it kicks a$$. It may not be as good as the 5D3 or the 1DX, but at a fraction of the price it's certainly more than capable. A few observations, and then a handful of shots:

- The center focus point on AI Servo didn't miss a single shot all day. Not a single picture was out of focus and I ski with some absolutely rippin' skiers. They do not ski slowly.
- I used AI Focus and the outer focus points a handful of times as well, and it worked great. Still getting used to the focus point controls since they're different than my last camera- I missed a couple shots by my own fault when I forgot to switch between AI Focus and AI Servo.
- I can tell the 6D's burst mode is a little lacking at 4.5 fps, but it's still plenty to capture great shots. Sure, I'd love to have 10 fps, but I'm not paying four grand for a camera.
- I think the shots from the 6D feel more "refined"... they just look different to me. Which is a good thing.
- All of these shots were taken with the Canon 28-135mm IS lens. Not one of the expensive "L" lenses, but certainly more than capable. I actually sold the 24-105mm L lens to get this and the 17-40L, and I think it's a great decision. I can't imagine the 24-105mm performing much better in this situation.

On to the pictures: this is only a select few of the shots where I wanted to highlight the focus speed or the DOF. You can click on any of the pictures to see more on my website.

Great pictures. Any post production on the pics? Or is that straight from the camera?

As long as you stay with the center AF you are doing ok. If you choose to do negative space type compositions (where your subject is off to the side third), you may find that it doesn't work as well...

^^^ True, but typically when I shoot those, I compose the shot first and wait for the skier to enter the frame. I'll have to try tracking them with one of the outer focus points; maybe since the guys I ski with wear such bright jackets, the non-cross type point will pick it up easier. :)

Fantastic shots, really want to do some of this photography one day should the opportunity arise! Glad to hear the 6D performed very well.

But... he did make it work (perhaps without using outer AF points) and did it very well. Very nice composition and focusing.

Why be a negative Nellie?

Excellent photography, OP!!!

Very nice shots! Hard to believe they came from a 6D and it's notorious focus system! You must have a good copy of the 6D!

My name is Gerry!... :D

Geriatric Gerry perhaps... but not Nellie!...

Maybe I am ...geriatric, because I am struggling with some outer AF performance in demanding conditions with the 5DIII... which I just got and started learning.

We all love our cameras and try to do the best with them, but let's not stretch other people's expectations by hiding the obvious...

Nice ski photos, especially with the given equipment. I've used a 6D for action shots (birds) with nice success as well, it's definitely better than its reputation would lead you to believe. If you end up wanting to shoot stuff like this a lot, you might try to pick up a 85 1.8 or 100 2.0 or 70-200 as they will track subjects much better and will also provide better overall image quality. Nothing wrong with these above, but I'm fairly sure you'd get even better results with a lens made for shooting action.

Also, speaking from my 6D experience only, I would not mess with the outer focus points for action. I always used center point focus and then crop for composition later in processing.

Not sure of your point here. Most of his pics have the subject off to the side, with virtually none centered. How can that be?
