Nice shots!!!

I used my 6D and 28-135 to shoot indoor dance yesterday and am stunned at how consistently sharp the over 800 images are. I'm considering the 24-105 for the extra stop at the long end, but with the 6D I suspect I'm the only one who might notice a difference and the extra reach of the 28-135 helps. Got mine used for $250 including filter. Crazy good bargain.

6D | 35 f2 | 50 1.8 | 85 1.8 | 28 - 135 f3.5 - 5.6 | 70-210 f4

Well then.... That escalated quickly.

Generally happens on this forum anytime that someone says 6D, mentions photos were taken with a 6D, or even thinks 6D in their head... Mainly by people who don't own and have never used a 6D and want to tell people "how it generally works."

That said, fantastic work both here and the work on your website, enjoyed checking it out with this evening's coffee (damn graveyards...).

The 6d has replaced the 5d/5d mii in that when someone used to post a photo with a tag line like "does football", or any other sport that usually requires a different body for optimum results they used to get a good ribbing for doing so. It's all in good fun so don't take any offense as I believe everyone acknowledges you did a great job in capturing the action.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

Not sure of your point here. Most of his pics have the subject off to the side, with virtually none centered. How can that be?

Selective cropping in post.

Actually the often bashed 5d2 focusing excelled at center point AF tracking with it's 6 invisible AF points. I've shot many rodeo shots with the 5d2 and it tracked very nicely using the center points.

Right... We sure don't want to give credit to those inferior peripheral AF points! Even though the OP said he was using them! He must be delusional!

Gorgeous shots!

I'll be picking up a 6D next month. I was planning on using it mostly for 'scapes, but now I'm optimistic that, as I learn to use it, it will be much more versatile than I originally thought. :)

To be fair, it was a combination of both. All of the AI Servo tracking shots were done with the center point and then I cropped for composition if I thought it worked. About 1/4 of the shots were done using AI Focus and the outer focus points to compose a shot where I waited for the skier to enter the frame (or get to the point where I wanted the image).

Oh, and here's one more... just because. :)

Only problem...AI Focus isn't supposed to work either!

Very nice! No wonder you're making money doing that!

It doesn't hurt to remember manual focus :-)

If you are in position to photograph skiers coming off a jump, you *know* where they are going to be. Pre focus and forget about it the same way I did for wedding processional shots for over 20 years.

If you don't need to blur the background into oblivion, then stop down to f8 or so. This should not be a difficult assignment from a focusing standpoint. Plenty of light outdoors and ISO ability way beyond what our old film offered, this should be easy :-) It's great the AF works as well as it does, but getting sharp action shots pre-AF wasn't as hard as AF addicts would have you believe and should be easier now. Also means you shouldn't need a 5D3 or 1 series to do it.

Nice shots - love 'em. Keep it up regardless of your methods :-)

Steve, the skier in that last photo would probably like a print of it for his wall... excellent.

As long as you stay with the center AF you are doing ok. If you choose to do negative space type compositions (where your subject is off to the side third), you may find that it doesn't work as well...

Pre-focus.

Pre-focus.

Congrats to OP that he made that to work for working around the huge deficit and limitations on the 6D, but seriously this is 2014 for God's sake, not the 80s....

Sure pre focus should work rather well in OP's situation if you are shooting f5.6 or smaller, try f2.8 or faster and you'd be prepared to throw away huge amount of oof shots....

It's very sad that one still has to pre focus just to get an off center composition....:( and I hate Canon for that with a passion ;)
