Canon 6D Does Skiing Shots

Coming from a fellow snow and photography enthusiast - Great shots I just picked up a 6D in the fall and have been waiting to get out to the snow. Too bad California is in a serious drought and we haven't had any decent conditions yet. It's pretty funny that I have had the camera and have frequented this forum and this is the first I heard of the focusing issues. I guess this camera is just so much better than what I used to have 50D, that I appreciate the results and notice what is awesome about the camera and not what is lacking. Someone once told me "a good craftsman never blames his tools". I think we work with what we have and you produced some great results. Thanks for sharing!

Nice shots despite what the 6D haters think! I am heading to Jackson Hole in less than two weeks and hope to enjoy the same kind of powder. I am thinking I will just take my 60D and the 24-105L to make it a bit less stressful.

It's widely believe that the 50D has better AF than 6D.

50D's 9 all crosstype points > 6D's 1 center crosstype + 10 non-crosstype points.

Also 6.3fps vs 4.5fps doesn't hurt either when it comes to action shots

You gain high ISO and lose AF, that's just facts of life

That's one thing I definitely noticed... the shutter wasn't clicking as fast as I was used to!

Extraordinary photos Steve.
I'm about to make the leap to the 6D. The majority of my pics are ballroom dance and track meets. I've been focusing the motion pretty well with the 5D, but the 6D ought to kick me up a notch. I know there are more advanced AF systems out there; I know the world is round too. I'm mostly looking at the years of ISO improvement that will let me close the aperture a couple of stops indoors and/or speed up the shutter. Focus has never really been an issue. Your shots are sharp as 'ell.

I agree, except that the photog came on this forum ( a gear forum may I add ) and talk about the 6d capabilities...what else should we be discussing.

I am just reading what the OP wrote and it seems to me the OP only used the center point for AF tracking...most likely because the outer points would not have delivered the goods. This is exactly how I need to use my 5d2 as the outer points are not adequate for using to AF track.

The 6d has better autofocus over the 50d...
Both are awesome cameras, but I was so sick of losing night/darker shots on my 50d.

The iq that comes out of my 6d is why I got into photography in the first place.. it's the first time I've been wowed by the camera and not just the lens.

Are you comparing center point vs center point? What mode are we talking about? One shot or Servo?

Have you tried comparing tracking ability with outer vs outer?

Ah! So is 6D better because of the -3EV sensitivity of the center point, or is it because of the amazing high ISO performance? Or both?

I rarely use my 50D since purchsing the 6D. The low light/high ISO capability of the 6D also allows it to lock focus faster. I find the nifty-fifty useable again on the 6D where it would focus hunt on the 50D in broad daylight.

Way to take it personal Hogerloff...didn't mean to get you and the rest of your 6D contrarians upset. Out of roughly 390,000 members there seems to be a gang of eight or so that hangs out in 6D threads dishing your garbage at every opportunity...even when the vast majority of people in the thread are being positive. "Discussing the abilities"? No way...always non-stop dissing the camera. It get's really tiring. You guys should just go play in your 5D3 threads (maybe you're not welcome)?. Or buy a 6D...you know you want one!

I've used the 6D for wildlife and the 9-AF points it miss leading, it's a great camera a tracking. Not up to the 5D3 or 1DX but you can make it track predictable slowish targets like skiers with great results on AF accuracy

if only it was purely "discussing"...
But sooner or later almost all these initially civilized 6D threads take a wrong turn unfortunately.
It's almost like the 6D is some sort of fly paper.
I'm done following this thread, everything has been "discussed" on the first couple of pages, nothing new to learn. No offense to anybody.
