As you can see by http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3272097 (external link) this is not an unknown issue, even going back to the classic which Canon would repair for free. Some people have had good luck getting the later 5D models also fixed for free.

You say it was a refurb from eBay. Who ultimately was the vendor? Private seller or someone like B&H or Adorama. If private seller your likely best recourse is through what eBay or Paypal offers. If B&H or Adorama they have exchange programs for I think 30 days and warranties for a year. I personally would suggest the repair of what you have through the best option. Getting a pristine 5DII with less than 10000 clicks is a good thing.

There is no such thing as a "mirror cover" in the camera. Perhaps it is just the focus screen that fell out? If so, it is an easy fix.

Like Mark I'm confused by the description "mirror cover". Do you mean the mirror has come unglued?

Mine did that and I ended up getting a scratch on the mirror. Cost me a few hundred dollars to deal with.

i got the camera from a private seller on e bay. there was a warranty he had shutter replaced but don't think my problem is covered on that warranty. i am worried same scenarion could happen again.seems to me i have a very delicate camera mechanism here.
a camera assistant said she would attempt to put screen back for me

It is not a common problem for the mirror to come unglued on the 5D Mark II. That was a known problem with the original 5D, but was resolved with that model in later production and is practically unheard of with 5DII. As others have suggested I suspect it's just a prob with the focus screen frame popped open, and hopefully the screen hasn't fallen out and gotten damaged.

You don't have to have that tool to put the focus screen back in place. It helps, but a pair of standard plastic tweesers will work too. If necessary, you can release that latch with a fingernail (where they show using the tool). You might even be able to use your bare fingers to position the focus screen within the frame.

However try it is best to use a plastic tool or to only handle the focus screen by the edges or, even better, only by the little tab that protrudes from one side. Make sure the frame is open. Place the screen within the frame (or just make sure it's not askew in the frame). Then carefully swing the frame up until that latch on the front snaps it into place.

If the focus screen is damaged and needs to be replaced, it is easily user replaceable and a new one costs $35 (from many sources online). You have a choice of three types of focus screens.... EG-A is the standard one. EG-S is a high precision screen (aids manual focus, with f2.8 and faster lenses), and EG-D screen with a grid to help with composition. The tool you see at that website is included with the Canon screens.

While replacing the focus screen, try not to touch the mirror right below it. It's easily damaged.

If you contacted Canon and they quoted you $300, that was probably for replacement of the mirror. Your description of the problem originally sounded as if there was a problem with that. Now it sounds as if it's only a problem with the focus screen.

Most likely you can therefore forget using the term "refurbished", at least as the term applies when used by Canon, Adorama, or B&H.

As others have indicated the tool comes with the focusing screen. But to reinstall the screen I don't think the tool is essential.

No, it is absolutely not possible. The seller is blowing smoke and trying to avoid responsibility. It is likely that at some time he removed the screen, either to replace it or for some other reason, and did not put it back in properly. A less likely scenario is that when the shutter was replaced the technician removed the screen and did not seat it properly when returning it.

OR...maybe it popped loose during shipping..I have seen shipping do some pretty crazy things to sensitive equipment, especially when Ace Ventura is your delivery guy! lol

I doubt it though..I would have to say the seller probably installed it improperly, like tzalman mentioned..and it just eventually worked it's way loose..

Not a big deal though..(as many have already commented)

Did you use the camera for 3 weeks before the focus screen popped down? That is not the fault of the previous owner. Even if it happened the day you got it, I would just chalk it up to bad luck. The tab that releases the screen is not protected and I suspect it gets bumped sometimes when you change lenses.

I also bought a used 5D Mk II and about 1 year later the same thing happened to me. I just popped it back up and it never came loose again. After you close it up you may see some extra dust in there because you had it open for so long. If you see a lot of dust, open it up again, take your rocket blower and try to blow the dust out and then close it up again.

If you do a Google search you will see that it happens to a lot of other people too. https://www.google.ca …+ii+focus+screen+fell+out (external link)
