I wear a pair of relatively thin "runners gloves" that have digisensor pads on the thumb and index fingers so that you don't have to take off your gloves to answer/use your phone etc. Over that I overlay a pair of fingerless gloves, currently of Ragg wool but soon to be replaced with an even nicer pair of fleece fingerless gloves. The combo gives you touch (for camera controls etc) without actually exposing your skin to cold. The fingerless 2nd layer adds an insulation layer to all but the fingertips. If that's not enough, they make fingerless gloves with "convertible" mitten tops, ie they fold back and are held either by magnets, Velcro (not preferred), or an elastic band.

This is a cheap solution from Swedish company Jula:

Quick to get the finger tips out as needed.

What kind of gloves do you use for Photography in the Winter?

It's winter time here in Sweden, today it was -11C...not fun going "barehanded", and all the thick isolated gloves are to clumsy for handling the camera (or buttons/dials on the camera ;) )

Some dexterity.
Keeps you warm enough.
Exposed important finger tips.

Very best,

Marmot Wrist Gaiter: Thin, warm, stretchy and can be worn inside gloves.

Aquatech, bought a size larger and used polypro glove liners.

I have a pair of these and find that the holes for the finger and thumb are very constrictive and uncomfortable, cutting off the blood supply. And I have hands that are on the small side.

I was going to get a pair of "photo gloves" from B&H, then decided on a pair of winter golf gloves from Amazon. lol Glad I did.
They won't keep your hands toasty, but while not in your pockets or using a warmer the leather with a very thin internal liner is a good balance of feel and keeping the chill off. I have a pair of larger Thinsulate gloves to cover them with when my hands are exposed for longer periods.

I use thick isolated mittens, and choose camera that can be handled with the mittens on.

Would a wireless remote trigger through a window while warm inside be a good option? Because that's what I would be doing at -10 degrees.

Here in Finland it can be quite extreme at times in the winter, just like in Sweden. I have used for some years Windstopper Gloves. You can use the controls on the dslr through them. No need to go with a finger barehanded. I have used them regularly at -25 C for 4-6 hours/day. Mine is quite worn out, so it's time to buy a new pair :)

When I first read the OP's post I thought he was talking about -11 F. I don't shoot when it's that cold. Oh and just a week or so ago it was -30 F, which would be about -111 C. I don't think my camera would work.

conversion error

-30 °F = -34 °C (-40 is where they match)

-111 °C = -168 °F

And my camera has been proved to work without issues at about -37°C (~ -35°F). Then I used windproof cotton mittens with thick wool mittens inside. And a wooden tripod with a RRS BH-40 ballhead.

I damaged the focus system of a lens by using it at -30°C.
Probably wasn't too nice for the lubricants.
