Doing this shoot with a friend who rides trials (think Danny Macaskill stuff) in his garage.

The garage has the old/dirty feel and want to incorporate that look but also light him up appropriately without spilling a lot of light in the background.

Beauty dish high above him? Grid of some sort? I have a B800 but also YN560.

Ideas?

Grid is probably essential for the focus you need.
Use the 560 as a kicker, from either the near or far side as rim light. Try both.
I wouldn't get the main too high 45* is probably enough.

Hmm should I get a grid on my 48" octabox? He'll be standing on the rear wheel balancing if not getting a full shot of him with the bike.

You want an "old/dirty feel and want to incorporate that look", but you want portrait lighting on him? Then move him as far from the background as you can & light it with a direct & hard side flash. Try different angles with the "portrait" light until you find one that works.
You'll probably have to use a WA lens, but that should help with the "look".

More of an action shot while he's riding if that makes sense. So direction & edgy lighting might compliment the dirty feel?

Trail riding in a garage? Its hard to picture. But to minimize spill, use grids and get your lights as close to the subject as possible. The closer the lights to the subject, the quicker the falloff to the background.

Trials; a lot of static movement on seatless bike. This is a typical indoor setup. A lot of balancing on rear wheel, hopping to front, etc etc. Kind of like this photo in the link: http://www.trashzen.com …artybikes-warehouse-zone/ (external link)

But yes this is what I was looking for. I thought of using the 560 with gel also to light up the background in different colors as well.
