I've had the 85 1.8 for quite some time, and I love most things about it. It's really an amazing lens for the money. But lately I've been noticing some color fringing issues. They're almost always when shooting toward the sun, which I know makes fringing more common. It seems very unpredictable though. Sometimes it happens worse than others. Has anyone else experienced bad fringing issues with this lens? I included some examples, both close to 100% crops. Not good snaps or focus, but useful for this example.

Bad Fringing:

Taken at just about the same angle towards the sun, but not near as bad. Some fringing still visible, but manageable:

It is normal, all the 85/1.8 are like that. Even the 85LII has purple fringing, not as much though.

Very common on this lens. High contrast situations it's the most prevalent but easily taken care of in Lightroom.

This is the reason my 85mm stays in my bag 99.99% of the time. It's also the reason I've been debating selling it. I much prefer the 100mm over the 85mm.

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

Thanks for the quick responses. This currently 1 of my 2 lenses so I use it quite frequently. I guess that's why you need to know your gear in every situation. Glad this was just for fun so the IQ didn't really matter.

+1 That's why I sold my 1.8 and bought the L. I hated a beautiful photo ruined by massive purple and green fringing. The L still has a little but not nearly as much. Plus it does 1.2. ;)

Nothing a little PP can't fix though, for the price of the 85 1.8 it's a tolerable inconvenience

Is there a quick way to fix it without having to use the select tool, create a new layer, then pull the new layer back a few pixels? I use PS Elements, not Lightroom.

Does elements have the ACR functionality of CS6? If so there is a tab for this where you can tune the colors and range to be definged.

If not, before CS6 I used Gimp with a plug-in.

I don't think so, but then again I'm not super great with PP. I learn new things almost daily, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. At least not Elements 10 which is what I have I think.

LR5 (Lightroom 5) does a pretty good job of fixing it, and it's easy. Just click with the eyedropper a time or two, and it's gone (mostly). If you use the 85mm a lot, having LR5 would be essential IMO.

dropper? don't you just use the slider under "Lens Correction" > "Color"?

A few clicks in Lightroom and CA is sorted.

I generally use the CA Dropper as it's very quick and easy.

The dropper is the best method as it selects the proper shade and amount. You can always tweak it after with the sliders.
