I was at the farmers' market. Just outside the paved area where vendors' booths are, this woman was sitting on the grass with her dog. They looked very relaxed and comfortable. I don't know who she is or what's in the basket; maybe she brought it to carry purchases in.

What I noticed that made me try to get a photo was the roughly triangular shape that she and the basket and the thing behind it made, with her dark clothes and hair and the black on the basket and the other thing, which might be a shoulder bag, I can't tell. Another feature was the similarity between her salt-and-pepper hair and the dog's multicolored coat. The basket group also has black, white, and gray.

No stealth. She oftens lays on the stairs where she can look out the door side lights.

I always called them hornets. This nest used to be totally enclosed except for an opening in the bottom used as a doorway. It was shaped like a fat upside down teardrop. When Fall came, the hornets disappeared because of the cold. Then something (birds, I guess) opened the nest to get at the eggs. I think they ate them all as I could not see a single egg cell that had not been robbed.

Barbara, we have a lot of these around here. We call them paper wasps also, but the baldface hornets seem to have the same style living quarters. What a nuisance they can be during the latter days of summer when it is hot outside.
