Corel Knockout

I have CS2 but find it challenging to separate a photo from a background. Would Corel Knockout make this easier?

There are lots of ways to do this in photoshop. First try the magnetic lasso, I only found it recently.

Next try some steps from this page. Do "common first steps" then "The Layer Mask", then increase the contrast of the layer mask until it's close to black and white. Then tweak by hand.

Another way has to do with channels, but i've never needed to learn how, if I ever do I have a bunch of photoshop books for reference. I'd try a google.
