I haven't seen this recommended yet, so I'll throw it out there. Increase your dynamic range? Shoot a high dynamic range photo.

HDR can produce a distorted artsy impression of an area, but it can also produce an image that takes what is present and enhances the dynamic range, making things lost in the shadows appear again, and avoiding blown highlights.

HDR offers the dynamic range of B&W, in color.
