tethered question

hello guys and gals, i'm i need of a little help and have a question about tethering my camera to my computer,i finely got lightroom #4 on my laptop and have been reading this new book by scott kelby the lightroom 4 book "grate book to" question i have been trying to tether my 7d p.c. and with lightroom up and running it shows no camera detected and also i notice its doing the same thing when i try to tether it with canon utilitys i'm thinking its this hdmi htc-100 cable!should i just order a new one and has any one gone though this also it seems the only way i can download my photos is though a card reader witch also points to the htc-100 cable i think!!!

Yes, Gerry is correct. Use the micro USB to USB cable that came with the camera.

i should have said interface cable to USB,not hdmi,but have the same problem can't tether.

Did you try cycling the camera off and on while connected?

Do you have a memory card in the camera? You still need one even when shooting tethered. Not having one will result in a "busy" error and it wont connect.

What OS?

Does the SD card show up as a removavle drive when you plug it in? Also from memory the camea needs to be set one of the non-Auto modes, eg Av,Tv M.

The camera has mini USB, not micro USB.
When tethering, the EOS Utilities software can be set up to send the image to the computer only, not to store on the memory card. Don't know if other softwares can do the same.
The camera should be off when connecting physically, and then you turn it on to connect logically.

Yes, mini USB is the correct term. It also should be noted that when shooting videos while tethered to EOS Utility, the option to save directly to the computer is not available. Videos must be stored on the card first and then downloaded to the computer after recording.
