get a lens with odd number of aperture blades...it'll give you more bursts...as right now the aperture blades cause your rays or whatever you want to call them to be double up...so they're not lining up perfectly to give you those crip shots

if you are happy with the 24-105mm range...you could look at the new sigma 24-105OS....it has 9 blades, and will give you 18 total rays...

also the 24-70mm f2.8'II, 24-70f4IS, tamron 24-70VC have 9 as well

the cheaper tamron 28-75mm has 7

I've been wanting the 17-40 for landscape and cityscape work. It has 7 blades (14 point stars)

I've noticed ;) can't justify the $ though.

Te starburst filters suck. I've seen so many shots where people used them and they look absolutely horrendous. Every light source picks up the starbursts with that filter...reflections, glows, everything as opposed to just light sources. Plus I'd rather do it naturally from the camera instead of relying on a filter. Plus the starburst filter makes the points way too long and they're colored weird.

You can stack multiple filters, each one to take care of appropriate effects or side-effects.

Thanks for the info! I just like the idea of letting the camera do the work instead of some cheap filter effects. The only filters I'll really let touch my lenses are CPLs NDs and GNDs. No effect added there, just letting less light in. Or correcting glare.

Have you tried experimenting with different aperture settings to see if any of them get it right, by any chance?

Then your only option is a different lens or a filter.

Yeah, i stick with f/16 or f/22. Sometimes f/11 will provide enough starburst for me. Diffraction is the last worry for me, in these kinds of shots, and is a non-issue for me (on crop too). ;)

Don't buy a starburst filter. If it bothers you that much make them in Ps. It's pretty easy to do. I generally try to avoid making them when I'm shooting though.

One thing you could try would be stretching some pantyhose over the lens. It will give you fairly pronounced 4 pronged stars. :)

It doesn't bother me that much I think you missed the point. I can get the starburst no problem I'm just looking to improve the sharpness overall and was simply asking if there were lenses that were good. For Pentax, the 15mm produces these types of stars flawlessly without effort. I was wondering if there was a canon equivalent.

No filters or ps editing for me.
