I am posting this to see if the opinions are split 49% - 51% or is one is clearly superior.

Facts: Assume you are going on a trip abroad. (country of your choice) Reasoning: the costs are relatively the same.

Assume you have the 580 EX II flash if needed on both cameras.

The only options are those in the poll. No other lenses, no other gear. Just opinions on why you chose that option.

I'll take the 35L over the 40. Body shouldn't make too much of a difference in a vacation setting; to me anyways.

40mm is a great lens, but I wouldn't want to be limited to 2.8 for an extended period of time.

Need my AF and 2.8 is good for vacation. I used my 24-105 all the time when I was away anyway.

6D + 35L here.
The balance of advantages of the bodies favours the 6D for travel (better high ISO; no real need for the better AF of the 5DIII). The 35L is the better lens.

Great poll, tough choice.

I can't comment on these lenses as I have never actually used either, but I would choose the 35L + 6D combo for pure image quality. This all changes if I'm carrying my gear a lot. Canon 6D 760g + 35L 582g = 1342g VS Canon 5D mkIII 860g + 40mm 124 g = 984 grams. The difference is slight at 450 grams, but could save your shoulder. If you don't need all the bells and whistles the 5D has to offer, get a 6D with good glass. After all, when your holiday is over, you have some great glass to spice your kit up.

6D+ 35L for me. That 1.4 is so useful.

Not seeking to make a purchase, just using this poll as a topic for discussion among enthusiasts. My intent was not to claim a preference.
I have met users that are extremely loyal to both cameras. Given the similar cost for the gear I want to see how the poll will result.

Ic...

Well imo you don't buy a camera just for travel, it's not like you are going to sell it after.

If I travel a lot I wouldn't carry either....x100s or A7/A7R please ;)

6D is slightly smaller in size, but 35L is a lot bigger than the pancake.

Overall the 5D3 combo will be smaller and lighter.

Whether or not f2.8 is enough for your needs depend on the things that you want to capture and your expectation.

Lens > body, this was an easy poll.

I haven't used either lens, but 1.4 is worlds different than 2.8, amongst other assumed better qualities of the 35L.

Everything is relative.
Gear: 6D, Unholy Trinity:twisted: (24Lii, sigma 50A, 135L), and for the other ends of the spectrum, sigmaEX 14mm2.8 and sigmaEX 100-300F4.

I voted for 6D/35L. Nothing I shoot requires a 5D3. I certainly wouldn't need one on vacation. The focal lengths are so close as to be the same. I'd rather have wider and faster available if I need it. I can stop down either lens. I can't open a 40 to f/1.4.

way too easy. More fair would be 6D + 35L vs 5D3 + 35F2 IS.
