Mandarin Duck

We had a Mandarin drake show up at a local conservation area over the holidays and he became quite a celebrity. I had never seen one in the wild before (they have an Eastern Asia natural range) and this bird is most likely an escapee from a zoo somewhere. He was in a small area of open water with about 100 Mallards so it was hard to isolate him for a decent pic.

Scott I agree they llok great to me also. It may have come over from the British Isles as they have been introduced there.

Thanks John, there are also a couple of feral populations in California and North Carolina but they don't move around too much. This one was in our area for about 5 or 6 days and seemed really healthy and was standing up for himself with the Mallards.
