What is the best way to obtain EXIF data on web images? I downloaded a simple program but it often says the data unavailable.

I use firefox browser with FxIF extension. Right click the image and click "FxIF Data". It'll show the EXIF if it's available.

The fact is that very often for images on the web the EXIF will be stripped from the image, hence your message. Either the photographer will do it before they upload or the web host will just strip it anyway, free ones are more likely to do that. Although it is only a few bytes per image when you are dealing with millions of images that soon mounts up.

I also use FxIF with Firefox. As Alan said, often Exif is stripped so it's no surprise if it returns no data.

Flickr and Photobucket both strip the EXIF from the photo itself but have it on the site itself. With Flickr click on the bottom selection or more on the page where the photo is hosted. To get it from Photobucket, you need to get it from the Photobucket page itself, not from the image. The trick to get to that page when all you have is the URL of the image is to add .html to the end of the image's URL so that it ends like this: .jpg.html

As for other hosts, there are probably tricks to get the EXIF from them, but these are the two I know about. I use FxIF with Firefox as well for those that are easier to obtain. As for the really hard ones to obtain, such an image embedded in a "Lightbox", it is probably best not to tell how to do it on a forum because of the very real possibility someone may misuse it.
