Hey all. Just need some advice, I am thinking about buying a lens. I am a bit torn between 2 right now. The Canon 70-200 2.8 non is or the Canon 100-400. I had the 70-200 2.8 a while ago but had to give it up for financial reasons, now I would like to get it back. I dont need the IS because I had great results without it.

Anyone here have experience with the 100-400 on a 5d mark iii?

IMHO the 70-200 is more versatile as you can reach 140-400 with a 2x tc; I don't like the pull-push zoom action either.
I tried the 100-400 on a 1Ds3. Not an awful performer, but only a 4.5 at 100. It all comes down to your shooting style and preference - you had it before anyway.

Heya,

What are you wanting to shoot?

Personally, I rarely use anything other than 200mm on my 70-200. If I was able to get the 100-400mm for the same price, it would be a no brainer, I'd get the 400mm. You still get the 100mm range, but you go up to 400mm. It's night and day difference. Do you really need 70~100mm range? If you do, then get another zoom maybe.

Also consider if this is for walking around, or if this is for use with a tripod/monopod. They're not light weight lenses.

Very best,

Thanx for the help so far. I shoot everything I can, not serious sports or anything. Like i mentioned before I had the 70-200 and I loved it, just thought I would try something different. It comes down to crispness of the pictures for me. I think the 70-200 can produce sharper images without going with the prime option.

The 100-400L works very well on a 5D3. It really boils down to what you want the lens for -- if you need more reach, then the 100-400L is a better choice than the 70-200 with a 2x TC. If you need a faster aperture, the 70-200 is the better choice.

The 100-400L is my primary wildlife lens -- usually on a 7D, but will use it with the 5D3 whenever we go to the zoo.

The 100-400 is a great wildlife lens and if you are going to be doing that sort of thing its great. But given the weight, the larger max aperture, and the mediocre IS its not really an all around lens like the 70-200. So if you are going to live between 200-400 its an obvious choice but if you are going to use the wider side of the gamut get the 70-200.

Thanx all. I think I will go with the 70-200. Nice all around lens.
