Posted this over in G&N Talk, but perhaps it was the wrong section and it's better suited here...

In looking to build my knowledge in modeling photography, I came across a book titled "Mastering the Model Shoot" by Frank Doorhof that looked rather useful and informative.
I was planning on picking it up, but was also wondering what the suggested "must-have" books are for learning and continuing to refine the model shoot (in terms of lighting, ideas, poses, and inspiration).

The thing is, I can look at magazines all day and get ideas but it's more mimicry to me than understanding the core mentality and fundamentals that formed the idea. I'd like to know what goes on in each photographer's brain that goes into and behind each shoot. So, I'm looking more toward that type of learning than just looking at spreads that talk about the fashion begin worn or what's in style. However, I do understand a lot of it is inspiration, so I will definitely take these ideas to heart as well. I appreciate the suggestions.

I struggle all the time to find inspiration. There is no best way. However, it seems like using the tools of the trade more often (opposed to less often) seems to foster the environment for creativity to take off.

This stuff sure aint easy!

Funny..It's not mimicry.... everything has been done. If you study the lighting, color blocking, poses, etc...... it's been used over and over again. It's different interpretations using the same technique all over again and again.

I'll second this. I subscribe to the e-editions of many of these magazines (Zink & W being favorites) to find ideas & inspiration. You might also visit the Shoot The Centerfold Store online. Ales Bravnicar's book of Lighting Diagrams is a favorite, though it and others there are kinda' spendy. Subscribe to Photovision... lots of photographers on there whose ideas I then go and dig into on their websites. Brian Demint is a favorite.

Ok, not going to argue an opinion, but I see your point.
